Looking for a fun and free activity this summer? The CCLL is recruiting 3- and 4-year old children to participate in a study at the University of Ottawa! Contact [email protected] to learn more or to set up an appointment at your convenience!
This study looks at children’s understanding that different people have different preferences and that these can change as we age. For instance, do children understand that although they might love juice now, when they grow up they may prefer drinks like coffee or tea. Free parking is provided and you child will receive a small gift for helping us out.
Our previous research has found that the ability to understand that preferences can change over time improves between the ages of three and five years old. We are looking to extend and strengthen these published results by adding more participants to the study and investigating the parallel development of other cognitive skills such as theory of mind and executive functioning. Check out the link below to take a look at what we have already done!

What Will I Like Best When I'm All Grown Up? Preschoolers' Understanding of Future Preferences

Are you looking for a fun activity to do with your child during the March break?
If so, we have some new studies for 7-year-olds at the Childhood Cognition and Learning Lab at the University of Ottawa. We can schedule you to come in during the day, the evening, or on weekends to participate. In these studies, we’re interested in finding out more about future thinking and planning in older children and also their ability to set short- and long-term goals. These studies take approximately 40 minutes to complete and involve special games and treats. We also thank children for their participation by giving them a small gift to take home with them. Free parking at the University or bus tickets to compensate for transportation costs are also provided.
Finally, we are always looking for 3-5 year-olds to participate in ongoing studies about children's understanding of how preferences change over time.
If you’d like to participate, you may contact our lab coordinator, Isabelle Cossette, at [email protected] so that we can find a day and time that is convenient for you.
We look forward meeting you!

Did your child participate in our study about children’s understanding of knowledge back in 2013 with Julian?
We found that younger children tended to believe that – even as babies – they had always known what they currently know (e.g., that clocks tell time or that elephants are grey). At around age 5, however, children seemed to understand that their knowledge about the world had increased over time. The results for this study were recently published in the British Journal of Developmental Psychology. You can find the paper here: https://goo.gl/pYDhNb
We’re always looking for 3- to 6-year-olds to participate in our fun, 1-hour studies at the University of Ottawa. Please contact our lab manager, Isabelle ([email protected]), for more information or to participate. See you soon at the Childhood Cognition and Learning Lab!

Starting this September, the Childhood Cognition and Learning Lab is collaborating with a researcher from Queen's University for a study with children and adolescents with ASD.
The ASD Studies Lab at Queen's University is interested in investigating the self-perception of children and adolescents. We are currently recruiting children with Autism Spectrum Disorder who are 11-15 years old and verbally fluent.
During this 2 to 2.5 hour appointment at uOttawa, your child will be asked to complete a variety of activities and will be asked how they thought they did before and after completing three tasks. They will also do some activities that look at memory and IQ. Your child will be compensated $20 for their time.
Please contact us at [email protected] for more info and to set up an appointment!
