“What would I say to this scared 2-year-old version of me today? Look, when you’re 40, life will feel very scary and uncertain, but know that God is your healer, your provider, your savior, and your comforter. There will be moments when He feels absent, and you will be more afraid and terrified of life. But it is in those moments that He will show you His mercy and love, and you will taste and see that the Lord is good. He will never forsake you.
‘Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.’ *(Psalm 34:8, NVI)*
God is real. He knew you before you were born and had a plan for you—a plan to give you prosperity and peace.
‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’ *(Jeremiah 29:11, NVI)*”
——
(Jeremias 29:11, NVI)”

The Global Refugee Forum in 2023 gathered countries and organizations in Geneva from December 13-15. With over 4,000 attendees and 10,000 online, the focus was on commitments to support refugees, including resettling 1 million by 2030. I, Elen Joseph, had the honor of representing Carolina Larriera and the Centro Sergio Vieira de Melo, engaging with UN diplomats and ambassadors, a truly humbling experience. Words from Carolina: “In representation of the Sergio Vieira de Mello Center of Brazil, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of Sergio’s death, and on the occasion of the exhibition on his life, we would like to sincerely thank the organizers, and take a moment to reflect on the life of a man who was truly committed to peace.
Sergio had an intense career built around some of the most resonant episodes of the past 50 years. He undertook what became one of the most difficult, but ultimately the most successful mission ever: lead Timor-Leste’s birth into an independent nation. This was the first time the UN was able to fulfill one of the dreams inscribed in its founding charter. At the time of his death, Sergio Vieira de Mello held the top UN Human Rights job – what many identified as the “conscience of the world.”
For that reason, the Sergio Vieira de Mello Center is also dedicated to the dissemination of his legacy and was founded by Gilda Vieira de Mello and Carolina Larriera in 2008. It also works in democratizing the learning of diplomacy. The Center advocates a complete and inclusive society, where all voices are heard, and no distinctions are made. One society where transparency and accountability are front center values – the same principles that Sergio gave his life for, yet continue to remain so fragile.
Thank you.”

The Global Refugee Forum is a crucial gathering where countries and organizations come together to discuss and commit to supporting refugees. In 2023, this significant event took place in Geneva from December 13-15, attracting over 4,000 attendees with an additional 10,000 participating online. The participants focused on making concrete pledges and sharing the responsibility for helping refugees, building on the progress achieved since the first Forum in 2019. The commitments made included resettling 1 million refugees by 2030, offering job and education opportunities, and providing legal support. The Forum was attended by a wide range of stakeholders, including Member States, international organizations, financial institutions, civil society groups, and the private sector.
I, Elen Joseph, had the honor of being invited by Carolina Larriera to represent her and the Centro Sergio Vieira de Melo in the opening section of the event in remembrance of Sergio's commitment to refugees. It was a privilege to meet and interact with UN diplomats, Brazilian ambassadors, and consuls from around the world, who warmly welcomed me. The experience was truly humbling and rewarding.
