I think the biggest reason why ASD and ADHD students thrive in our school is in large part because we give them so much "downtime". Our students don't spend 6 hours restraining themselves from their passions and what they really want to do with their time.
If a student is overstimulated, they walk out and take a break, no questions asked. If a student wants to spend half the day working on their current hyper-fixation project, they are allowed. And, there is almost always someone around who is happy to sit and listen while a student info dumps about their favourite topic.
This video gives an excellent explanation of "Restraint collapse" and how it negatively affects the mental health of ASD and ADHDers: https://www.facebook.com/share/r/18o5hdpamA/

Reporting shows attendance is down at schools across Ontario, and it’s a signal that students need more support.
As OSSTF/FEESO President Martha Hradowy told CTV, students show up when they feel supported, connected, and safe at school. If the government is serious about improving attendance, it needs to invest in smaller class sizes, mental health and special education supports, and stable staffing.
Instead, the government is issuing hundreds of staff layoff notices in the middle of this crisis.

All the more reason to consider alternative education. Hey Ontario, what about students with health issues? What about students with mental health issues? Talk about no inclusive policies…

A different kind of Summer School!
Summer school classes through the school board are rigid and rushed. 6 hours a day for 3 weeks, no thanks!
Traditional online courses have more flexible timing, but can be incredibly dry and have very little teacher support.
At Dandelion, we are bringing you the best of both: Personalized, engaging, supported, and flexible!
