One of the best parts of my job is when I receive my clients' skill lists. I love that, even though they're struggling, they can still use words like "joy", and that the assignment instructions allow them to come to their skills from a place of appreciative inquiry. They're encouraged to focus on what they have going for them, instead of heading straight into everything they think is "wrong." It changes the mindset from the jump, and creates space to consider potentialities other than that they're somehow broken or deficient or hopeless (P.S.: nope, nope and nopey nope.) Learning these kinds of important details also allows me to help them do the crucial work of lining up their natures with their interests and goals, and challenging toxic narratives that have been holding them back. It's the work of my life and I will never, ever quit.
