Purpose is easy to talk about. Living it is the harder part.

For bookkeeping and accounting firms, purpose shows up in the decisions we make every day. How we support our teams, serve our clients, invest in our communities and respond when the right choice isn’t always the easiest one.

In the latest issue of Numbers & Sense, Matthew Wong, CPA and co-founder of Purpose CPA, shares his experience building a values-driven firm and what he has learned about turning good intentions into meaningful action.

His message is a good one for any business owner: you don’t have to get everything right or do everything at once. What matters is knowing what you stand for and continuing to make choices that reflect it.

Your clients trust you. Are you ready for what's coming?

A new survey commissioned by Xero found 49% of Canadian small-business owners would trust their accountant or bookkeeper most to manage access to their financial data, yet 82% have never heard of the Consumer-Driven Banking Act — the law bringing open banking to Canada. Nearly 1 in 5 are still sharing banking passwords directly just to get their books done.

Businesses that know about the change are roughly twice as likely to use open banking in its first year. That gap is exactly where advisors come in.

We're digging into this — and what it means for your practice — in a dedicated session led by Michael Cascone, at the Autumn Tax Primer on Tuesday, November 17, 2026. A one-day virtual event for bookkeepers, accountants, tax pros, and financial advisors across Canada. 6 CPD units included.

Anyone can call themselves a bookkeeper. But what does it mean to be a qualified one?

As bookkeeping continues to evolve, so does the responsibility that comes with it. Today’s bookkeepers are helping business owners navigate cash flow, compliance, technology and some of the most important decisions they make.
That’s why professional standards matter.

CPB Canada CEO Rick Johal recently spoke with CanadianSME Small Business Magazine about the changing role of bookkeepers, the importance of certification and why raising the bar for the profession ultimately helps build stronger Canadian businesses.
Because when business owners trust someone with their numbers, they deserve to know they’re in qualified hands.
