Humans Can Form New Synapses at Any Age

The brain stays plastic (changeable) your whole life. This is called neuroplasticity.

That means:
• New connections (synapses) can form
• Old, weak connections can strengthen
• Useless pathways can get pruned
• Efficient pathways get faster and more automatic

So when you take a teen who “can’t count” and teach them in a way that clicks, you’re literally helping their brain build and reinforce networks that didn’t exist (or were weak) before.

This doesn’t happen in some isolated “math lobe.” It’s a network effect across:
• Visual pattern areas
• Working memory
• Attention systems
• Language processing
• Executive function (planning, checking, self-correcting)

Math is a whole-brain activity, not just a “math center.”

Why Teenagers Can Still Make Huge Leaps

Teen brains are in a remodeling phase:
• They’re pruning inefficient pathways
• Strengthening frequently-used ones
• Myelinating connections (making signals travel faster)
• Developing better executive control

So when you fill in foundational gaps (counting, number sense, pattern recognition), the brain goes:

“Ohhh… THIS is the framework I was missing.”

Suddenly:
• Patterns become visible
• Counting becomes automatic
• Math stops feeling random
• Cognitive load drops

That’s why improvement can look dramatic and sudden.

Another boost☺️

He is really excited about his coop and we can see his confidence in math increasing. James his teacher at St Nicolas was an angel in his shift towards taking his education seriously, encouraging him to work hard and teaching him so many invaluable tips for learning.

“Some students and families fear asking for help. But it’s not a sign of failure — it’s a sign of strength, courage, and a desire to grow. Real strength is wanting to do better. Asking isn’t weakness — it’s a step toward success.”
