She is Austrian, he Swiss; she is a poet, he a playwright; she is a daredevil yet vulnerable, he is adventurous but a little conservative. When Ingeborg Bachmann and Max Frisch meet for the first time in Paris in the summer of 1958, they are already international celebrities of the literary world. In the four years that follow, they dabble in great love and an open relationship between his hometown of Zurich and her adopted Rome. Frisch envies her fame; Bachmann finds his typewriter clatter and his jealousy annoying. She is emancipated, experiments with a liberated existence, is mobile and productive; in Berlin, she writes the famous speech: "The Truth is Bearable for Humankind". She only realises afterwards that she is suffering, and by how much – with Adolf Opel in the desert, and with Hans Werner Henze in Italy. Margarethe von Trotta interweaves the times before and after the catastrophe. Her direction is frank, sober and elegant. Ronald Zehrfeld as the corpulent, pipe-smoking Frisch and Vicky Krieps (in the role of another cult figure after Empress Sisi) are the perfect match. This film is not about Bachmann’s fatal end, but about her hopes for love and respect, in literature, and in life.

Elle est autrichienne, lui suisse, elle poète, lui dramaturge, elle audacieuse et vulnérable, lui hardi et un peu bourgeois : Ingeborg Bachmann et Max Frisch sont déjà des stars internationales de la scène culturelle lorsqu'ils se rencontrent pour la première fois à Paris, à l'été 1958. Les quatre années qui suivent, ils tentent de vivre un grand amour et une relation ouverte entre Zurich, sa ville natale, et Rome, sa ville d'adoption. Frisch envie sa renommée ; Bachmann est agacée par le cliquetis de sa machine à écrire et par sa jalousie. Elle est émancipée, libre, mobile, productive ; à Berlin, elle rédige le célèbre discours « Die Wahrheit ist dem Menschen zumutbar » (La vérité est supportable pour l'homme). Ce n'est qu'ensuite, avec Adolf Opel dans le désert et auprès de Hans Werner Henze en Italie, qu'elle prend pleinement conscience de sa souffrance, et surtout de son intensité.
Von Trotta entremêle les périodes d’avant et d’après la catastrophe. Elle met en scène de manière directe, sobre et élégante. Ronald Zehrfeld, dans le rôle d’un corpulent fumeur de pipe, et Vicky Krieps (après Sissi dans un autre rôle culte) sont parfaits dans leurs rôles. Ce film ne traite pas de la fin tragique de Bachmann, mais de son espoir d’amour et de respect, dans la littérature comme dans la vie.

On 31 August 2021, a group of young people go on hunger strike in Berlin's government district to draw attention to the climate crisis. Six months later, a part of the group meets again. Lina is now with the "Last Generation" and wants to pressurize the government through means of civil disobedience. For Taura, Guerrero, Charly and Fuchs, this form of protest is not enough: in order to stop the impending tipping points, they prefer to take further steps…
Filmmaker Felix Maria Bühler accompanies his five protagonists over the course of a year. He takes part in actions and offers an insight into the climate movements in Germany: "Fridays For Future", "Extinction Rebellion", "Ende Gelände" and "Last Generation".

Lina fait désormais partie du mouvement « Letzte Generation » (Dernière génération) et souhaite faire pression sur le gouvernement par le biais de la désobéissance civile. Cette forme de protestation ne va pas assez loin pour Taura, Guerrero, Charly et Fuchs : pour empêcher les points de basculement imminents, ils veulent emprunter d'autres voies...
Pendant un an, le cinéaste accompagne ses cinq protagonistes. Il les suit dans leurs actions et donne ainsi un aperçu des mouvements climatiques en Allemagne : « Fridays For Future », « Extinction Rebellion », « Ende Gelände » et « Letzte Generation ».

🎬 The European Union Short Film Festival (EUSFF) and Taste of Europe goes to Winnipeg! 🎬
This year’s festival travels to Ottawa, Montréal, Québec City and to Winnipeg — bringing a vibrant selection of European short films to audiences across Canada for free.
The festival is accompanied by the popular “Taste of Europe” event where you can experience the culinary variety of Europe.
Germany’s contribution, “JOY”, tells the story of Joy who accuses Aron of sexual abuse in the midst of his thirtieth birthday at a karaoke bar. After Joy's announcement, everyone holds their breath for a moment. And then the party continues...
The film is presented as part of the festival programme at Dave Barber Cinematheque on Saturday, May 23 at 10h30 AM.

🎬 Le Festival européen du court métrage (EUSFF) et « Taste of Europe » débarquent à Winnipeg ! 🎬
Cette année, le festival fait étape à Ottawa, Montréal, Québec et Winnipeg, proposant gratuitement au public une sélection dynamique de courts métrages européens à travers tout le Canada.
Le festival s’accompagne de l’événement très apprécié « Taste of Europe », où vous pourrez découvrir la diversité culinaire de l’Europe.
La contribution allemande, « JOY », raconte l’histoire de Joy qui accuse Aron d’abus sexuel au milieu de la fête organisée pour ses trente ans dans un bar karaoké. Après l’annonce de Joy, tout le monde retient son souffle pendant un instant. Puis la fête continue...
Le film sera présenté dans le cadre du programme du festival à la Cinémathèque Dave Barber le samedi 23 mai à 10 h 30.

The 13th edition of the European Union Short Film Festival (EUSFF) returns Friday, April 24 and Saturday, April 25 at Arts Court/Cour des arts Theatre (2 Daly Ave.)
