When I first started touring Starbucks locations in 2017, I learned something crucially important:

People don’t owe you their attention just because you’re singing & playing guitar in public. Building a fanbase takes sweat. It takes practice. It takes failure, and getting back out there. Again, and again, and again.

Become UNDENIABLE. Here’s how:

First: get really, really good at your craft. That means practicing. That means vocal coaching. That means getting better at piano or guitar. That means writing songs that are authentic, hooky, and socially relevant. Consistent effort, over time.

Second: package yourself in a way that says “I’m here to be taken seriously”. That means having a consistent presence across social media platforms. That means playing well-put-together live shows. That means outlining specific, reachable goals, and taking intentional steps towards them.

Third: have systems in place to receive real feedback. That means playing your original songs in front different rooms of people - online and offline - to find out which ones are worth recording.

Today, I am a singing, piano, and guitar coach, with an emphasis on songwriting and performance.

I have helped budding musicians to:

- successfully audition for performance roles
- increase confidence in singing live
- improve piano and guitar skills to “support the song”
- write authentic, compelling original songs
- learn how to arrange covers songs to represent who YOU are
- put together effective set lists for paying gigs

When I first started touring Starbucks locations in 2017, I really didn’t know what I was doing.

I had performed live music before, but playing three shows a week to cold audiences was entirely different.

Most people were just passing through on their way to grab a coffee. They didn't show up that day expecting to stumble upon ME, singing for people in line.

It was completely up to me to make those shows a positive experience, and to engage people enough to stay for more than one song.

Show after show, I kept trying to deliver a performance strong enough that someone would buy a CD between sets. After more than 150+ Starbucks shows and a lot of trial and error, I started gaining real attention and selling CDs to brand-new listeners consistently.

By 2019, I started touring bars, restaurants, ice cream shops, and coffee shops for a profit.

Today, in 2025, I'm a singing, piano, and guitar coach, with an emphasis on songwriting and performance. I am confident in my ability to help students grow because everything I teach comes from hands-on experience.

The approaches I share were hard-won through years of playing in front of live audiences, and they WORK.

Hi! My name is Kristy Hagerman. I teach piano, guitar, and singing with a strong emphasis on songwriting & performance.

What sets me apart as a music instructor is that I lead students beyond rudimentary knowledge to really unpack the building blocks of compelling songwriting. In classes with me, you'll learn how to:

- Use simple chords to really "grab" your listener
- Write hooky lyrics that are personal AND resonate with a large audience
- Work with compelling melody layers called "underlicks" to create what I like to call "the secret sauce"
- Create fully formed songs that are recording-ready
- Perform your songs confidently in front of a crowd

Classes are 1-on-1 and take place over Zoom, and are $60-90 per lesson depending on commitment level.

- I've personally landed a 100+ show coffee shop tour with Starbucks Coffee where I performed AND booked a unique supporting act for each show.
- I've toured across Ontario with help and alone, cold-calling and booking every single venue myself.
- I've put in the hours booking and playing hundreds of shows of every conceivable shape and size: everywhere from the legendary Opera House in Toronto to coffee shops, restaurants, bars, patios, backyards, legions, community centres, schools, and yes, even to lineups at an infamous ice-cream chain at multiple locations across Ontario (here's looking at you, Kawartha Dairy)!
- I've even recently been working with a PR and marketing company where my role has included liaising with press, booking acts for and hosting a solo acoustic music festival at The Ottawa Bagelshop (https://ottawabagelshop.com/pages/events).

- In addition to my on-the-ground experience, I have professional training in singing, songwriting, music theory, piano pop chords, Royal Conservatory piano, guitar chords, recording, music editing, production, and live event production.
- I started writing songs when I was 10, and over the last 18 years have written and co-written hundreds of songs.
- After attending a private career college for Audio Production, I worked in a major Toronto recording studio where I learned the best ways to track, edit, tune, and mix Major Label quality music.
- I got signed to that major studio's record label, during which time I was the face of a 200-ad Toronto streetcar and billboard campaign and received a $10,000 recording grant.
- I also have experience working totally solo, creating a successful Music Coaching Business from scratch that has paid my bills since I launched in early 2021.

With TikTok gaining huge ground in the music scene - breaking multiple new artists last year - I’ve been finding there is a huge need for music lessons that emphasize songwriting and performance. So this is what I’m offering.

This September I’m accepting 10 new students for 1-on-1 virtual music classes.

Each class is tailored to the student’s individual goals and interests. Classes will cover any combination of the following: music theory, piano foundations, guitar chords, singing & performance, lyric writing, chord structure, and pop songwriting.

The goal is to help each student develop the skills needed to perform their music in a way that grabs people's attention - both live, and on digital media platforms - in order to build toward a profitable career in music.
