Today, we had the privilege of gathering at the Embassy of the Czech Republic to celebrate the end of another successful year at Czech School Ottawa, present report cards to our students, and recognize the many people who make our school community possible.

For those who were unable to attend, I would like to share the remarks I delivered today. These words are for all of our students, parents, teachers, volunteers, supporters, and friends who contribute to our school throughout the year.

Good afternoon, Your Excellency, members of the embassy, fellow teachers, dear parents, volunteers, and especially our children.

It’s a real pleasure to welcome everyone here today.

Before anything else, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Embassy of the Czech Republic. Your support means a great deal to our community, and the fact that we are able to gather here today is yet another example of your commitment to Czech language, culture, and heritage here in Canada.

I’d also like to thank our teachers and volunteers.

People often see the few hours that our school is open on a Saturday, but they don’t always see everything that happens behind the scenes. The planning, organizing, teaching, preparing activities, answering emails, setting up, cleaning up and occasionally solving problems we never saw coming. Our school simply would not exist without the dedication of our teachers and volunteers.

And then there are our parents.

Parents deserve enormous thanks. Every Saturday morning, while many people are still deciding whether they’re going to get out of bed, our parents are already on the road bringing their children to Czech school.

Some families travel incredibly long distances. In fact, I think it’s fair to say that a few of our families spend more time driving to Czech school than some people spend commuting to work all week.

And they do it because they believe something important: that language matters, culture matters, and roots matter.

To our children, I’d like to say thank you as well.

I know that spending part of a Saturday in school is not always at the very top of your wish list. There are many other things you could be doing. Yet you come, you learn, you participate, and you help keep Czech language and culture alive for another generation. We are very proud of you.

What we are doing together is much more than grammar lessons or vocabulary. We are building a community. We are creating friendships. We are preserving traditions and giving our children a connection to their heritage while helping them grow into confident young Canadians with Czech roots.

Today is a celebration of all of that.

So on behalf of the Czech School and ČSSK, thank you to the Embassy for its continued support, thank you to our volunteers for your dedication, thank you to our parents for your commitment, and thank you to our students for your enthusiasm and hard work.

Together, you make this community possible.

Učitelé a učitelky ČSO

Učitelky a učitelé z České školy Ottawa se o víkendu zúčastnili 14. ročníku konference českých škol v Severní Americe, která se letos konala v krásných prostorách Czech Center Museum Houston.

The teachers from the Czech School Ottawa took part in the 14th Annual Conference of Czech Schools in North America, held this year in the beautiful spaces of the Czech Center Museum Houston.

Program byl opravdu nabitý a kromě samotné konference jsme stihli i páteční výlet do Space Center Houston, kde jsme si prohlédli legendární Apollo Mission Control Center. Je to zvláštní pocit stát na místě, odkud se kdysi řídila cesta člověka na Měsíc.

A abychom nezůstali jen u historie vesmíru, dostali jsme se i k trochu „pozemštějším“ zážitkům – společnému neuvěřitelnému barbecue, které by si klidně zasloužilo vlastní kapitolu programu. 😄

Samotná konference pak nabídla opravdu bohatý vzdělávací program:

📚 Setkání se spisovatelkou Klárou Smolíkovou, která se dlouhodobě věnuje literatuře pro děti a mládež i popularizaci komiksu.

📚 Inspirativní workshopy Markéty Vokurkové zaměřené na dílnu čtení, badatelské učení a metody RWCT, plné praktických nápadů do výuky.

📚 Workshop Ireny Michalcik z Czech School New York o možnostech využití umělé inteligence při přípravě hodin českého jazyka.

Velké poděkování patří organizátorkám Kristýně Horáčkové, Ireně Čajkové a Johance Dickerson za perfektní přípravu celé akce, stejně jako zástupcům MŠMT a MZV za jejich podporu a dlouhodobou péči o české školy v zahraničí.

Odjíždíme s hlavou plnou nápadů a nových podnětů k inspiraci do další práce a už teď se těšíme na příští školní rok, kdy budeme moci vše naplno využít. 🇨🇿🌸🇺🇸

A special collaboration between the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Ottawa, the Czech School Ottawa, and the Czech and Slovak Association in Ottawa.

World-class champions Martina Ptáčková (8× World Champion) and Josef Ptáček (4× World Champion) are coming to Ottawa for a hands-on evening focused on real-world safety, confidence, practical skills, and combat sports.

This is not a spectator demo, it is interactive, beginner-friendly, and designed for everyday people.

💡 “The goal is to build confidence, physical fitness, and the ability to respond correctly in crisis situations.”

Participants will learn practical, real-life skills such as:

✔ Basic stance, movement, and balance

✔ Safe falling and getting back up

✔ Escaping grabs, holds, and physical pressure situations

✔ Creating space and safely exiting confrontation

✔ Ground movement and positional awareness basics

✔ Introductory striking and kicking in a safe, controlled environment

✔ Stress management and decision-making under pressure

A strong emphasis is placed on prevention, awareness, and learning how to avoid conflict whenever possible.

Fun, interactive session focused on movement, coordination, confidence, and basic self-defense principles.

Practical training focused on self-defense, combat sports fundamentals, awareness, stress response, and safe escape techniques.
