If you want to actually speak your second language in 2026, don’t just study it. Do this instead.
Studying rules is not always what helps people speak more naturally.
Meaningful exposure often does.
According to Stephen Krashen, we acquire language through Comprehensible Input: language we can understand through context, repetition, gestures, images, and real-life situations.
Children show us this clearly. They do not begin with grammar books. They hear language again and again, connect it to meaning, and gradually begin to understand and speak.
This is especially important for Canadian public servants learning their second language.
At work, success is not only about passing a test. It is about being able to participate in meetings, speak with colleagues, explain your ideas, and respond naturally in a bilingual environment.
That is why real exposure matters:
conversations, podcasts, videos, meetings, coaching, workplace role plays, reading, and daily interaction.
