In response to the communication question:
Wise women talk because we have something to say; bamboozles because they have to say something.
For the better part of every day, we are communicating to and with others. Whether it’s the speech you deliver in the boardroom, the level of attention you give your family when they are talking to you, or the look that you give to your pet, it all means something.
When I say the word, “communication,” what do you think of? Lots of people will think of the spoken word. People who are hearing impaired may well think of sign language. People who are visually impaired, like my nephew Peter, may think of Braille as well as sounds.
Communication methods include person-to-person, telephone/mobile, e-mail, fax, Facetime, social media, radio, public presentation, television broadcast, and many more!
On the surface, communication seems simple, doesn’t it? I talk, you listen. You send me an e-mail or text; I read it and reply. President Lampe appears on a video or TV, we watch or listen to him. However, to speak to some of our members, I require an Inuktitut translation, perhaps a person with sign language and/or Braille.
I will also have to consider our members location, definable by time and by place. I.e. different time zones – our members are spread across our country. For example: Danny works on the east coast, while Mr. Igloliote works on the west coast and I am in Ottawa. In this case, maybe an email will probably work better – depending on the urgency of the issue, etc. I aim to spend at least 90% of your time listening and less than 10% of your time talking. I will respond appropriately and in a timely fashion to your questions, emails, texts, and phone calls, etc.
Traditional communication often focuses on what is wrong and how we can fix it. I will also practice appreciative inquiry as it focuses on what is right and how we can make it better. I have found this to be refreshing, energizing way of approaching problems and uplifting our people.
Thank you Mary and Kim, communication is very valuable to an Ordinary Member representing the Constituency of Canada.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION COUNTS
With grass roots experience working in a constituency Cabinet Minister’s office for a decade and contending in Provincial/Federal elections for Labrador Districts, going door-to-door up to my waist in snow, I gained valuable experience. I helped our people to put food on their table, assisted in obtaining housing, and assisted constituents to find jobs, self-employment needs and with applications for funding to attend college/universities.
In my hotel business, I implemented hiring Inuit policy priority. I quickly learned also that our livelihood plans are the range and combination of our Inuit cultural activities, choices that we make to achieve our livelihoods goals and of course there are circumstances that may be beyond our control. Based on our respective ambitions and education our income support and understanding of our options available, different categories of households: unfortunately, some in poverty and others even below poverty – develop and pursue various livelihood plans.
These approaches include short term considerations such as ways of earning a living, i.e., employment, self-employment funding, and coping with devastations that life sometimes presents (loss of a loved ones, death by su***de). This past year managing being safe from COVID-19 pandemic, housing/food security and health has been a challenge.
I believe similarly in longer-term aspirations for our children’s future as Nunatsiavut Government members, in taking good care of our elders, and honestly the wellbeing, happiness and aspirations of all Inuit. Together we have addressed membership birthright (blood quantum), and I greatly appreciate your feedback, calls and comments. One word that stood out, talking to a member, today is Inuit-hybrid.
I wish to hear from you about homelessness/food insecurity and mental health. What is working for you? What is NOT working for you? What do you think we can do? I am here to represent you!
These are some of the challenges that we see within our communities, across the country, among our people, and I am looking forward to addressing TRUST and working together to bring about much needed CHANGE. Will you kindly join me as we journey together on this path into our future?
Thank you for your support. ❤
