Christopher Dietzel, Ph.D. (he/him) is a research associate on t the iMPACTS Project and also works in the Sexual Health and Gender (S**G) Lab. Dr Dietzel's research explores the intersections of gender, s*xuality, health, safety, and technology. Recently, his interests have focused on issues of consent and s*xual violence, particularly related to mobile apps and LGBTQ+ people.

At the height of the pandemic, many singles turned to dating apps to seek relationships. This effectively changed the way people dated, but has the pandemic changed dating forever? What do mobile apps have to do with power relations? To help us answer these questions, we’re excited to welcome Dr. Chris Dietzel to the podcast, Dr. Dietzel conducts cutting edge in the realm of dating and technology that cater to men who have s*x with men (MSM).

Grad work can be time consuming and overwhelming. Late nights at the library leave little time for dating, let alone a relationship. There are plenty of mobile apps that help students connect with potential partners. In this episode, we share our experiences using dating apps while in grad school. We also discuss racism and racial fetishization on dating apps.

He has been teaching different martial arts and fitness for 25 years (he taught his first class when he was 15 years old!) He helps adults and students find their gateway to enjoy fitness to consistently workout. Most importantly he is Xingtan’s personal trainer.

You’re not getting along with a committee member or your thesis supervisor, is a poor leader, a poor communicator, a bully or simply missing in action? Do you feel a lack of support from your PhD supervisor or committee member(s)? Are they just not the best fit for you style of learning and you’re not sure what to do?

In this week’s episode we discuss the difficult task of switching supervisors and committee members. Xingtan and I share our individual stories and we walk you through the steps we took to make the switch. The key takeaway from this week’s episode is that switching PhD supervisors or committee member should not a taboo topic, it happens more often than you may think. You do not have to accept unacceptable behaviour, this is your journey and you have to do what is best for you to ensure you complete your journey. Enjoy this week’s episode, it was a difficult but important conversation to be had. We hope this conversation helps some students facing similar challenges.
