Are you considering piano for a kid, but are trepidatious because of the “traditional” music lesson format not being the best fit for them?

I may have a solution for you!

I offer Music for Young Children piano group classes. They are an age appropriate, collaborative group class that teaches them all of the various aspects of not only piano playing, but music making. We use a variety of multimodal approaches: Rhythm instruments, movement, games, singing, solfège, tinsheet and magnets, rhythm stories, puppets and physical manipulables, listening, memorable stories about the keyboard and rhythm critters that are used to introduce these concepts, playing at the piano as a group, solo playing, cut and pasting, drawing, composition, games, etc.
There are many entrance points depending on your child’s age:
Sunrise - a pre-keyboard class directed towards kids 2-3 years old
Sunshine 1 - 3-4 years old
Sunbeams 1 - 5-6 years old
Moonbeams 1 - 7+ years old

My studio embraces neurodivergency with open arms. I am an extremely experienced teacher of those with neurodivergencies and I have many tools and strategies at my disposal to allow brains of all types to thrive 🙂

Reach out to me for more details or if you have any questions 🙂

This video really speaks to me, as both an educator of both neurotypical and neurodiverse students.

What Michael Sheen does which I have so much respect for, is allow Leo the space and time to articulate his question. Leo very clearly wanted to ask his question. He just was taking longer than a neurotypical child or adult would. And Michael Sheen just held the space, gave Leo support, attention, and let him know that they would go at his pace.

I have so many students who may not play immediately, when asked to perform a piece or a section of a piece. Not because they are wanting to be disobedient, not because they don’t know what to do, but because there is a lot going on in their brain and sometimes their processing speed takes time, especially (although not limited to) people with exceptionalities in either mental or physical abilities. I have students for whom it might 10 seconds to actual sound being produced after I give a musical instruction, other students who might take 2-3 minutes. The same with students answering a question such as what is the note name in the 3rd space in the staff.

I know that parents and music teachers (and I am not perfect and am guilty of it occasionally too, especially when we’re running short of time in a lesson) have difficulty holding that space. They can see that time spent in silence at the beginning as a waste of time because they aren’t actively playing. Sometimes parents and teachers can see the answers a lot sooner than the child can, and we forget to leave them the space to figure it out, we expect an answer right away.

I see time spent not actively playing or figuring out notes on the staff as processing time. I see them preparing. I see them thinking through things. I see them problem solving. I see them making mistakes and then fixing it themselves. And often that amount of time will decrease as time goes on, not all the time, and either way that is fine!

Anyway, all that ramble to say, koodos to Michael Sheen, the world needs more people like you!
