Accent reduction is ideal for business-savvy individuals

One of the quieter parts of this work is what happens when a client feels foolish in front of you.
I had a client , I'll call her Jessica, and we were working on the American short A, the vowel in cat and map. Part of producing it the way an American does is smiling through it; the smile helps force the shape of the sound. So there she was, smiling through a simple word, telling me she felt ridiculous.
What I've learned over years of this is that the moment a client admits they feel ridiculous is usually the moment they're closest to getting it right. So I told her: from where I was sitting, she sounded fine. Better than fine.
She didn't have to feel comfortable to be doing it well. She just had to be willing to feel uncomfortable long enough to come out the other side.
If you've ever worked on something and felt silly doing it, that feeling isn't a detour. It's the road.

A river isn't fast because it rushes.

It's fast because nothing gets in its way.

If English isn't your first language, you've probably been told the opposite your whole career. That fluent means quick. That hesitation looks like uncertainty. The way to belong in the meeting is to keep up with everyone else.

So you sped up. You shortened your vowels. You stacked your words tightly so nobody could find the seams.
And the room heard effort, not authority.
Here's what I've watched happen with the executives I coach, many of them in their forties, fifties, sixties, decades into careers where their expertise has never been the question:

When they slow down on the words that matter and let the rest breathe, something shifts. The room stops working to follow them. People lean in instead of leaning back. Their ideas land before their accent does.

Speed was never the goal. Clarity was.

If you've been told to "slow down" your whole life and resented it, I understand why. But there's a version of slowing down that doesn't make you smaller. It makes you heard.

What's a piece of communication advice you were given that turned out to be wrong?

I get asked this all the time: "Which app should I use to improve my accent?"

In today’s video, I’m breaking down the pros and cons of using technology to refine your speech.

The Pros: Apps are convenient, affordable, and great for daily drills. They help with vocabulary and basic sound recognition.

The Cons: They lack the nuance of human connection. An algorithm doesn't understand your unique linguistic background or the subtle "mouth mechanics" required to master difficult sounds.

Apps are a tool, but they aren't the whole toolbox. If you want to stop sounding like a textbook and start sounding like yourself—with clarity and ease—nothing beats 1-on-1 coaching.

I help my students identify the "invisible" habits holding them back so they can communicate with total authority.

Check out the video and let me know: Have you ever used an app for your accent? Did it work for you? 👇

You've been the most qualified person in the room for years. You've done the work. You've earned the credentials. You've outperformed people who got promoted ahead of you.
And still — when you speak up in a meeting, something doesn't land the way it should. People ask you to repeat yourself. They talk over you. They reframe your idea in their own words and get the credit.
That's not a knowledge problem. That's not an accent problem. That's an authority gap.
The way you deliver your voice — your rhythm, your clarity, your presence — determines whether people listen or look past you. And that's a skill. One you can build.
Stop waiting for someone to finally notice what you bring to the table. Start making them hear it.

Your voice has a shape.
Most professionals don't hear it, but everyone in the room feels it. A rising tone opens the door. A falling tone closes the deal. Flat delivery? That's where authority goes to die.
Intonation is the difference between "I have an idea" and "Here's what we're doing."
You don't need a new accent. You need to master the curve.

Tag someone who needs to hear this.

You didn't come this far to still feel overlooked in the rooms that matter.
I've spent 20 years working with executives from over 35 countries; leaders at companies like Apple, Amazon, and FedEx. And the ones who came to me weren't struggling because of their accent.
They were struggling because there was a gap between how capable they were and how they landed in a room.
That gap has a name. And it's closable.
If you're a senior professional who's ready to finally be heard the way you deserve , I'd love to connect.
👇 What would change for you if that gap closed tomorrow? Tell me in the comments.

Most people think the goal is to sound more American.
It's not.
After coaching executives from Apple, Amazon, FedEx, and dozens of other global companies, the pattern is always the same. The breakthrough doesn't come from sounding like someone else. It comes from finally sounding like you, only sharper and clearer.
That's the work. That's what changes careers.

If this resonates, share it with someone who needs to hear it. 👇
