Helping local kids achieve their maximum learning potential with an individualized and multisensory tutoring approach.

As educators we try our very best to help as many students as we can in maximizing their learning potential. For many reasons, students can fall behind but we must look at the whole child and what they bring to the table as part of any intervention approach. As a literacy coach I often assist students in organizational skills, developing good study habits and routines that allow them to manage their school schedule and stay on top of competing priorities. I received a lovely “thank you” recently from a parent whose child is very intelligent but was not engaged in school work and was falling behind with missing assignments. After building and implementing routines they are seeing wonderful returns on their efforts and commitment. This fills my cup! 👏👏🎉🎉👩‍🏫👩‍🏫

The English language has a rich history that is essential to understanding a word's spelling. Alongside phonology and morphology we can teach English orthography utilizing a student's logical reasoning skills, giving them agency over the English writing system. The latest research is telling us that the integration of a word's meaning, history, morphology, and phonology equals better orthographic mapping (word patterning) and comprehension both at the word level and at the sentence level.

The role of morphology in literacy is gaining traction and what better way to learn how to integrate it into your literacy practice than taking a workshop with Marie Foley. A dear friend of mine and amazing educator. I highly recommend this workshop to anyone looking to add morphology into their reading and spelling instruction.

In this course, we will be using the beautifully written and illustrated book “The Cloud Spinner” by Michael Patchwork as a context for investigating the interconnected aspects of meaning, spelling and phonology of English.

Teacher-led investigations, discussion, explicit instruction, and visual models will be used to introduce students to the structures that govern English orthography.

Expected outcomes include increases in reading, spelling, and writing skills. Students will learn processes for determining the structure of words, leading to increased depth of understanding about the cohesiveness of English.

Watching our literacy campers engage in the English language through practical application is amazing. We discussed the free base and all related words and word parts. We then became painters and painted a masterpiece with paint.
