Another great start to literacy camp of simply showing these smart campers about the structure of the words they are already using in their communication. We watched a video about sports being a part of our culture for hundreds of years, then observed a picture of kids playing. Using our vocabulary we described what was happening in the picture and as a group we came up with which all needs to happen for everyone to get along and play safely. We then did a word study with to understand word structure and introduce generative affixes which these campers are already using in their communication.

It’s been a great week at literacy camp where these early readers learned about words and the English language writing system. It’s just a start but I’m glad to have had the opportunity to open their minds just a little bit about how traditional English words work.
