What can a scientist tell us about the water we use every day? 💧 For Science Literacy Week, we visited Ontario Tech’s Aquatic Facility with Dr. Denina Simmons, Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Aquatic Toxicology in the Ontario Tech Faculty of Science.

Dr. Simmons answered some frequently asked questions about our water here in southern Ontario, including how safe it is to swim in and what we should know before turning on our taps.

The future of mobility is moving forward in Durham Region.

Ontario Tech has partnered with the City of Oshawa - Municipal Government, 1855 Whitby Accelerator, the Region of Durham and the Town of Whitby - Local Government to oversee DRIVE, Durham Region’s hub within the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network.

DRIVE will help companies develop, test and commercialize next-generation mobility technologies by providing access to research expertise, specialized facilities and business support.

Ontario Tech University is strengthening its leadership in the evolving mobility landscape through a new partnership led by the City of Oshawa to oversee the Durham Region Innovation and Vehicle Ecosystem (DRIVE).

Innovation isn’t always about inventing something entirely new. It can also be about reimagining what’s possible with what we already have. Through a partnership with Mapleview Energy, Ontario Tech researchers and students are exploring how retired EV batteries could be repurposed for energy storage. 🔋⚡

We visited the Advanced Storage Systems and Electrified Transportation Lab and sat down with Ontario Tech Electrical Engineering professor Dr. Sheldon Williamson, PhD student Alvin Huynh and CEO of Mapleview Energy Nick Nesbitt to hear how this pilot brings together research and industry expertise to tackle real-world energy challenges.

That’s why the conversation about how we develop and use technology needs to extend beyond our campuses and into the communities we serve. This week, Ontario Tech brought Tech with a Conscience to Toronto’s Union Station, putting an important question in front of thousands of people moving through the heart of the city each day.

At Ontario Tech, we’re committed to developing the talent, research and partnerships needed to help ensure innovation is guided by purpose and responsibility and delivers meaningful impact. Because how we choose to develop and use technology matters, and the future it helps create affects all of us.

Ontario Tech is pleased to welcome Laura Money as the new Chair of its Board of Governors, along with four new governors joining the board for the 2026-2027 academic year.

Together, they will provide important oversight and strategic guidance as Ontario Tech continues to grow and strengthen its impact.

A little behind-the-scenes look at exciting work happening in the ACE Climatic Wind Tunnel. 🎬 Today, the Lung Health Foundation visited ACE to capture footage for an upcoming campaign featuring Ontario Tech Associate Professor and Registered Respiratory Therapist Dr. Mika Nonoyama and her research on how extreme weather conditions can affect children living with asthma. In partnership with the foundation, Dr. Nonoyama’s research uses ACE’s specialized climatic chamber to study how extreme temperatures and humidity impact breathing and symptoms.

The goal? To help families and health-care providers better understand how changing weather conditions may affect children with asthma, and make informed decisions to help keep them safe. We’re excited to see Dr. Nonoyama’s research featured in the Lung Health Foundation’s upcoming campaign.

Ontario Tech is building a more connected campus, with new spaces and opportunities designed around the student experience.

At the centre of this vision is a new academic building targeted for 2029. It will bring flexible, tech-enabled spaces for experiential learning and collaboration, while creating stronger connections between Shawenjigewining Hall, the library and the rest of north campus.

The transformation also includes:
• Fall 2027: The Ridge will add 450 student residence beds. 🏠
• August 2028: The Campus High-Performance Complex will add nearly 60,000 square feet of new athletics, recreation and student-life space. 🏀
