As AI becomes part of almost every profession, it's easy to wonder what the future of birth will look like. AI can help us learn faster, organize information, answer questions, and even make education more accessible. Those are exciting possibilities, and they're here to stay.

But here's what AI will never do.

It will never hold a trembling hand.
It will never notice the subtle shift in someone's breathing and quietly offer encouragement.
It will never sit in silence through a difficult moment, make eye contact, or help someone feel truly seen.

Birth has always been more than a medical event. It's one of life's biggest transformations. In those moments, people don't just need information, they need and crave human connection. They need to feel safe.

That's where us doulas come in.

We don't replace medical care. And AI won't replace doulas. Because the heart of birthwork has always been about people and connection, that’s not going to change.

One of the largest and most respected studies ever conducted on continuous labour support reviewed 27 randomized clinical trials involving more than 15,800 birthing people from around the world.

The findings were remarkable.

People who received continuous one-on-one support during labour, including support from a doula, were about 25% less likely to have a cesarean birth.

But the benefits didn't stop there.

The review also found that families receiving continuous support were:
🤍 More likely to have a spontaneous vaginal birth.
🤍 More likely to experience a shorter labour.
🤍 Less likely to use pain medication.
🤍 Less likely to leave their birth feeling negatively about the experience.

When we talk about the value of doulas, this is a PART of what we mean.

Continuous support isn't about replacing doctors or midwives. It isn't about making medical decisions. It's about having someone whose only job is to support the client, emotionally, physically, and informationally, throughout labor.

The research also found that the greatest benefits were often seen when the support person was someone dedicated solely to the birthing family, someone who wasn't part of the hospital staff or a family member. That's exactly the role Doula School doulas are uniquely trained to fill.

Client needs a little relief on a warm forehead during pushing? Cold cloth.

They are hot, tired neck after hours of contractions? Cold cloth.

It's one of those tiny things that can make a surprisingly big difference. It won't replace ALL of the various comfort measures you want to have on-hand, but it's another way to help someone feel just a little more comfortable.

Stefanie often tells the story of a client who was having a particularly challenging labor and the epidural she got for relief was patchy (didn’t work 100%). She was grumpy and discouraged.

Stefanie put a cool cloth on her forehead and the woman turned to her partner and said “that right there was worth the price of a doula”

So here's your friendly reminder: when someone is working SUPER hard in labor, remember a cool cloth as an option. Your future client just might thank you for it.

Harm that continues to reverberate through our society today. We must continue working toward care that is culturally safe, respectful, and led by the needs and voices of Indigenous families. There is still much work to be done, but we are committed to making positive change.
