I was pretty tentative about trying to learn guitar, feeling like I’ve missed the boat by a decade.

Fortunately, I crossed paths with Phoenix while looking for an instructor who could cater to my curiosity of music. His take on practicing on your own time, while paying for instruction really made sense to me.

Music theory can seem like a mountain to climb, but his method of teaching and breaking down music theory makes it far easier to understand than you might expect.

For example, a previous instructor spent a lesson with me playing the song Learning to Fly ad nauseam while I had no understanding why I was playing these chords. Instead, Phoenix built a foundation of theory to understand how a chord progression is made up. So rather then continually playing other people’s song, I can understand and write my own progressions.

Beyond that, Phoenix catered my education to my interests, working through areas that either I found interesting or struggled with. I’m someone who needs to understand why I’m doing something for it to make sense. His willingness to retool the way he taught me, while gauging and understanding how I learn best, really helped me get a grip on learning the guitar and theory. He took time to make up a massive guitar routine that I’m still working through when I wanted to gain more athleticism on my instrument.
Moral of the story, don’t let theory scare you if Phoenix is your instructor, I subscribe to his method.
