In a recent study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, Dr. Florin Pendea and co-authors from and McGill University found that wetlands within the Lake Simcoe watershed were 50 percent more effective in storing carbon and could provide potential climate change solutions.

Wetlands can provide potential climate change solutions: Lakehead study Dr. Florin Pendea alongside colleagues and several undergraduate students from Lakehead, spent three years collecting and examining soil properties and carbon accumulation rates over the last 100 years in swamps and marshes in the Lake Simcoe watershed.

Parks Canada Partnership Opens Up New Vistas 11/27/2023

Pollinator conservation, invasive species, and herpetology are just a few of the topics Simcoe County high school students are learning about through the Ontario Youth Naturalist Program. ⁠

A collaboration between and Parks Canada, the program provides training in conjunction with the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) environment sector certification.⁠

"By exposing young people to nature, they develop a connection to protected places and become interested in conservation," says Jennifer Belanger, Parks Canada public outreach and education officer.

Reporting to the Manager of Residence, Food & Conference Services, the Sr. Conference Coordinator is responsible for providing conference, special event, and group consulting, planning and coordinating. This is a fast-paced role requiring problem-solving, quick thinking, high energy and grace under pressure. The incumbent must keep track of timelines and ensure all event details are covered.

Specific duties include compiling event details, negotiating contracts, confirming internal and external events, submitting set-up, catering, parking and technical services requests, and virtual event services (webinar & meeting moderation, virtual conference set up and troubleshooting). The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring client insurance and risk management policies are received, building policies are followed, responding to phone, email and in-person inquiries as well as various related administrative duties.

Lakehead University researchers receiving more than $300k in SSHRC grants 11/17/2022

Lakehead professor Dr. Meridith Lovell-Johnston from the Faculty of Education, and her research team have received funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) to explore humanizing learning in online and offline spaces, inspired when postsecondary schools had to move online due to COVID-19.

“Looking more widely at the topic, students who traditionally face barriers to postsecondary learning, such as mature students, international students, and others, also experience a number of significant barriers to online learning,” said Dr. Lovell-Johnston.
