Thank you to the Hispanic Canadian Dufferin Peel Corp. for sharing your culture, traditions, heritage and food with our community. There will be a Spanish language film presented at the Mill street library on Friday October 16 at 7pm.

In our most recent urban canopy study, private land was identified as the largest area for canopy growth. Orangeville has a canopy target of 40% by 2040 and over 70% of our existing canopy is on private property.

Orangeville Transit

The Town has been waiting a long time for the new fleet of buses, and with the fare free pilot coming to an end in 2027, it’s a good time to look at where we go next with Orangeville Transit.

Ridership increased significantly when transit became fare-free. Since the route changes, it has come down. Speaking with residents, it’s clear the routes aren’t in line with what the community needs..

I don’t regularly take the bus, and I’m not going to pretend that I understand the day-to-day experience of someone who depends on it.

Next term, before any decision is made at the Council table we must form a small group of transit users to inform this discussion: seniors, students, commuters, people with disabilities and people who use the bus regularly. They can share with us what is working, what isn’t, where they are trying to get and what would actually make the system more useful.

I also think fares need to be part of the discussion.

That doesn’t mean going back to the way we collected fares before. There are much simpler payment systems available now. We should look at what a tap or mobile system would cost, what it could realistically bring in, and what reduced fares, passes or exemptions could look like. Ideally, fares for students and seniors will remain heavily reduced, or free.

And if the numbers show that collecting fares would cost almost as much as we would bring in, then we know that too.

We’ve made a significant investment in three new buses. Now we need to make sure we’re building the best transit system we can around them, and that starts with listening to the people who actually use it.

Healing through Dialogue: Honouring the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Yesterday at the Medicine Wheel Garden, Alder Recreation Centre, The Brave Canoe hosted an afternoon of learning, culture and conversation in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The event connected directly to the Calls to Action through language, song, traditional dance, artifacts and discussion. It was an opportunity to listen, learn and better understand the history and experiences that reconciliation asks all of us to confront.

Thank you to The Brave Canoe and to everyone who took the time to share their knowledge and culture with our community.

I learned a lot yesterday, and I’m grateful I had the opportunity to be there. Thank you for sharing your time and knowledge with me.
