Feeling a need to help those who have struggled, I worked for several years teaching criminals in the prison system. I also taught elementary school for a number of years. After teaching in the public school system, I saw children were falling through the cracks and needed to have help going through the paces at a slower rate. That’s when tutoring came to me and I knew this was where I belonged.
One of my special programs is in Pre-Teaching, which basically means I work to prepare the student on course content before they actually take the course at school. Oftentimes there can be a year between the time they finish one course before they take the next grade level. I have seen such an improvement in skill level if we can teach the subject all year.
I also served as a School Trustee for the Chinook’s Edge School Division, and have seen the educational system from both sides.
What makes tutoring interesting for me is the contact I have developed with different students, different ages, and different skill levels. It is so fulfilling to see a student go from struggling in the classroom to the confidence that builds as they begin getting passing marks.
