We're flashing back to a summer filled with ! Let's catch up with Olds High School grade 11 student Isaac A., who completed a RAP (Registered Apprenticeship Program) welding placement at Kelly's Welding. This was Isaac's second summer with Kelly's Welding. He started last summer in work experience and has since moved on to earning RAP credits, having completed Tec 1000, Welding 1167 and Welding 2167.

"My favourite thing about the job is the variety of jobs that have to be done," Isaac said.

Looking ahead, Isaac plans to continue his apprenticeship in welding.

Kelly, owner of Kelly's Welding, has supported both high school students and graduates of the CACI pre-employment welding programs.

This we remind all educators that you may never know the impact you've had on a student, but there are beautiful moments sometimes to remind us of why teaching is the best profession! A master teacher and former Spartan, Mr. Brad Clapp, was recently awarded with the Baillie Award for Excellence in Teaching from Queens University after EOHS alumni, Jenna Martens, nominated him during her graduating year. This prestigious award was presented to Mr. Clapp at Jenna's graduation ceremony from Queens. Congratulations Mr. Clapp, and thank-you to all teachers for everything you do, everyday, to make a difference in the lives of your students!

Chinook's Edge School Division (CESD) is looking for Central Alberta families willing to open their homes to a visiting student. The division is expanding its international student program, and homestay hosts are integral to its success.
Doors are open to international high school students at 12 Chinook's Edge schools. Each year, students from around the world join those classrooms. The connections benefit the visiting students, and they benefit local students and families too.
Chinook's Edge is starting the expansion in Japan, with Europe to follow, because both have a strong culture of global student experiences. Karyn Barber, associate superintendent of
system services, will attend an international student fair in Japan at the end of October.
"Hosting asks for generosity and trust, and the families who take it on tell us it benefits them as much as it benefits the student," Barber said. “We know our families have so much to offer
young people from around the world. Our welcoming rural communities are safe places for students to learn and explore what it means to be Canadian.”
Host families provide a private bedroom, three meals a day and a place in the family's daily life. Canada Homestay Network (CHN) screens and places students and visits homes as part of
that process. Host families receive guidance, ongoing support and a stipend toward hosting-related expenses.
Families curious about hosting can join a virtual homestay information session Thursday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m., led by CHN. The session covers what it means to become a host, what support CHN
provides and what hosting looks like day to day. There is time for questions. Come with questions, and see whether hosting could be right for you.

Last Monday we celebrated You Matter Day in Olds. The You Matter movement was started by the Ormann family in honour of their son Mitchell.

Mitchell was a Spartan, he was wise and witty. Mitchell was a proud Green Quad student and his class’s Valedictorian. Mitchell left an impact on all of those who crossed his path.

The You Matter award and the Valedictorian award, sponsored by the Ormann and Hembroff families, were handed out on Friday at our annual Awards night to two very deserving recipients.

Please remember that everyone is going through something we know nothing about. In honour of Mitchell, be kind to one another and reach out if you need to support.

Most of all, please remember You Matter.

One of our many students delving into careers work at EOHS! Well done Jackson!

We're flashing back to a summer filled with ! Let's catch up with Olds High School grade 11 student Jackson Z., who completed a Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) placement at Big Horn Electric and Controls Ltd. Jackson grew up around the trade, as his dad is an electrician, and it always intrigued him.

The placement gave Jackson a chance to explore electrical work, and he's now looking to pursue that career in the oil and gas industry.

"This job placement made me envision my future. It is a kick-off to life, as well as a head start in the trades. I enjoy gas plants, the great environment and the people," he said.

Jackson plans to finish grade 12 by the end of January and continue pursuing RAP credits full-time in the second semester.

Journeyman Red Seal Electrician Jeremy Zyderveld welcomed the chance to be part of the program. "Big Horn Electric and Controls is pleased to be a part of the RAP Program. We welcome the opportunity to teach the next generation of trade workers how to become a safe, reliable and valuable part of the workforce," he said.

RAP allows high school students to begin apprenticeship training while completing their Alberta High School Diploma or Certificate of Achievement. Students gain paid, hands-on experience in a skilled trade while earning high school credits and logging hours toward their apprenticeship.
