Cheers to life’s simple pleasures, friends!

Every day is full of micro-moments of joy, like a great cup of coffee or hanging out with a couple of donkeys on perfect summer day...you just have to be looking for them.

What’s one of life’s simple pleasures that you love?

No, we’re not comparing size of loaves to size of head!

Dean is listening to the bread for a nice crackling sound right after it comes out of the oven. The sound means there is an nice thin crisp crust, just the way we like it!

Cooking really does use all of the five senses!

Confession time - we make our pan sheet pizza A LOT!

It’s a family fav, there are so many variations in toppings we can have, and we’ve got the crust nailed so it comes out perfectly every single time.

What’s one of your favs that you never get sick of?

Do you ever use tools from the bathroom in your kitchen?

Today we made sourdough bread and used an old school razor blade to make these gorgeous designs before baking.

What tools have you used from other parts of your house in the kitchen?

Did we tell you about our Thanksgiving screw up? 🤦🏻

We bought a turkey that was too big. Like, WAY too big. We thought we were going to have a few more people over for dinner, because at the time that we first started making plans, the COVID cases were fairly low, but by the time Thanksgiving rolled around they had started climbing again, so our big Thanksgiving dinner was cancelled and it was just our family of five at the table.

We ended up with a 16kg (35lb) turkey for 5 of us! Well, 4 of us since Amelia is a vegetarian! Needless to say we have a LOT of turkey in the freezer!

This weekend we pulled a bit out and made turkey stew! We modified the Country Chicken Stew recipe that we found in the Edmonton Cooks cookbook. It’s amazing! Thanks Little Brick!

Preparing food can be so visual, so tactile!

There’s really nothing more satisfying than slicing boiled eggs! 🥚

Other than eating what you’ve prepared, what do you love about cooking?

I want to let you in on a secret!

Good food isn’t just about the taste. In fact it isn’t just about cooking or preparing your meals!

Shopping for your ingredients can be half the fun. At least, if you’re doing it right!

Sure, going to your local big box store on a weekend can be hell, but there are sooooooo many other options.

Our favourite? Local farmers markets! This is where you can find locally grown or prepared food sold directly by the farmers or the producers. It’s so amazing to get to know the folks that are bringing their food directly to you!

We’ve been going to our neighborhood farmers market (hey !) for so long that we’ve become friends with a number of the vendors. We’ve visited their farms and have gotten to know their families. Amelia even works there now!

And the best part...the food tastes amazing!! I can’t eat tomatoes from a grocery store anymore, or carrots. Or apples. Do you have a fav farmers market? Give it a shout out below!

Call all dessert lovers!
🥧
What makes a perfect dessert for you? Does it have to contain chocolate? Fruit? Ice cream? Does it have to be a sort of light and flakey pastry? Or will you choose a cake over anything else?
🎂
For me, it has to being back memories. My grandma loved making desserts, and this was one of her specialities. She called them Peanut Butter Marshmallow Squares, but I’ve seen them called Butterscotch Squares (typically they have both PB and butterscotch in them), and recently online recipes call them Confetti Squares.
🧁
Whatever they’re called they’re still damned delicious and so super simple to make! We used a recipe from this gem of a cookbook, Flapper Pie and a Blue Prairie Sky, which we just can’t get enough of! It has a recipe for both a peanut butter version and a Nutella version. We couldn’t decide so we combined the two!
🍨
Happy National Dessert Day! Make sure you celebrate it by getting your hands on your absolute fav dessert!! Take a pic with your fav dessert, use and tag us!
