Meet Marshall Powless, University Instructor at our Six Nations Campus! Marshall currently teaches Beginner Language Practice 2A, which focuses on developing foundational language skills while building confidence in speaking, listening, and using the language in everyday conversations.
Marshall’s passion for teaching comes from wanting to ensure that language continues to be spoken and passed on to future generations. He says: “Before joining the SNP team, I taught beginner language classes for youth and families in the community. Those experiences showed me how important language learning spaces are and inspired me to continue supporting learners at different stages of their journey. SNP felt like a natural step, giving me the opportunity to work with post-secondary students pursuing their Bachelor of Arts in Ogwehoweh Languages degree.”
To Marshall, his students are teaching him that learning never stops. Even as an instructor, he is still learning every day from the unique experiences, family teachings, and perspectives that each student brings from their own Longhouses. He says: “I value that exchange of knowledge and believe some of the best learning happens when we create space to teach and learn from one another. There is no hierarchy in learning if we all want the best for each other.”
Lastly, when asked what advice he would give to a student starting their journey, he replied: “Be patient with yourself and don't be discouraged when things get challenging. Language learning takes time, and mistakes are an important part of the process. Surround yourself with positive people who support your growth, stay curious, and never be afraid to ask questions. Most importantly, continue learning from your Elders and Knowledge Keepers whenever you have the opportunity. Their teachings are so valuable and can guide you throughout your journey.”
