Exciting news to report. Please join us in congratulating Haya Waseem on her debut feature film QUICKENING, which was produced thanks to the support of Sheridan College through the Telefilm Talent to Watch program, and is getting a theatrical run at the end of this month!!!
QUICKENING is premiering in select Canadian cities next Friday, April 29th. The film was selected to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2021 (where Arooj Azeem, the film's star was a TIFF Rising Star) and has since played the Vancouver International Film Festival, Santa Barbara International Film Festival, San Diego Asian Film Festival, and Atlanta Film Festival, among others. QUICKENING follows Sheila, a Pakistani-Canadian teenager living in the Canadian suburbs. Her parents, Aliya and Azeem have always given her freedom and encouraged her artistic pursuits, a rarity among their insular Pakistani community. Yet now, nearly finished her first year of university and falling in love for the first time with her classmate Eden, Sheila craves more freedom than her parents are willing to grant her.
The film opens at Cineplex Yonge-Dundas cinemas next Friday, April 29th and will be shown three times daily for the first week (an afternoon, evening and nighttime showing). If you are able to join us on opening night, there will be an intro and Q&A with the filmmakers. You can purchase your tickets for any screening on Cineplex's website closer to the premiere date, here.
As written by TIFF Programmers, "Quickening is a reminder that immigrants and their children, in particular people of colour, who are adjusting to a new life, new goals, and new expectations can also struggle with their mental health. We’re not just happy to be here. With exquisite photography from Christopher Lew, Waseem has crafted a delicate yet triumphant portrayal of a young woman, through all obstacles, caught in the pursuit of happiness." And the Hollywood Reporter praised the film as "part of a new wave of immigrant films from Canadian filmmakers telling first-generation tales of having to choose between freedom and family duty in a new and strange land." We hope you will come out to the theatre and support this film, made proudly by independent Canadian filmmakers; we made this film to share it with audiences and every show of support makes all the difference to the life of this film and the team behind it.
