Today, we recognize Emancipation Day, marking the day the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect across the British Empire in 1834.

Emancipation Day is an opportunity to reflect, educate and engage in the ongoing fight against both anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism and discrimination.

Members of the Appleby community are invited to join us for Homecoming Day on Saturday, October 3, 2026. This fun-filled day will feature activities and events for all ages, including a pancake breakfast, student athletic games, Kidzone rides and activities, open mic, a BBQ lunch, archival display, house tours, and much more. Homecoming is also a special opportunity for alumni to return to campus, celebrate milestone reunions, and reconnect with classmates and the Appleby community. Last month, a group of students and faculty travelled to Sarteneja, Belize, where they were immersed in marine conservation and Belizean culture through hands-on learning experiences. Through field investigations, students explored the importance of seagrass and mangrove habitats in supporting manatee populations by participating in quadrat sampling and ecological data collection. They also learned about sustainable fishing practices through traditional Belizean fishing techniques and developed skills in identifying and aging fish. The group had the opportunity to snorkel sections of the Mesoamerican Reef, where they observed reef biodiversity and assessed indicators of reef health. Throughout the trip, students developed a greater appreciation for environmental stewardship, cultural diversity, and the interconnectedness of people and ecosystems.

In June, a group of students and faculty travelled to Northern Thailand for an immersive exploration of how tradition and innovation intersect. Through engagement with local communities in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, including weaving alongside Hmong artisans and learning about social enterprises at Payap University, students experienced firsthand how cultural heritage and business can work together to support sustainable development. Trip highlights included hands-on experiences at an elephant sanctuary, workshops in traditional crafts, and a four-course cooking class. Through these experiences, students reflected on sustainable development, expanded their global perspectives, and considered how they might contribute to more sustainable and equitable communities at home.
