🦺 I CAME TO LEARN. I LEAVE READY TO WORK. 🚜 This is one student's journey to a career as a Heavy Equipment Operator.
Growing up in a construction family, Toby was introduced to the industry at an early age. While members of his family worked in construction and the trades, he started his own career as a labourer, helping with site clean-up and supporting crews on the job site. Although he enjoyed being part of the industry, he always had his sights set on operating heavy equipment.
That passion for machinery led him to enrol in the Heavy Equipment Operator program at OETIM. Having previously completed training with OETIM, returning felt like the natural next step.
“I wanted to come back because of the atmosphere and the instructors.”
One of the most valuable additions to the program was the simulator training. It provided a safe environment to build confidence and become familiar with machine controls before operating real equipment. Combined with hands-on seat time, the simulators helped reinforce key operating techniques and prepared him for the realities of the job.
Beyond operating equipment, he found the Employment Readiness and Soft Skills training to be surprisingly valuable. Learning how to write a professional résumé, prepare for interviews, communicate effectively, maintain eye contact, and present himself professionally gave him additional confidence as he prepares to enter the workforce.
His goal is to build a career as a heavy equipment operator and eventually work at Alamos Gold Mine in Lynn Lake. Instead of remaining in a labouring role, he now has the skills and training needed to pursue opportunities operating the equipment he has always admired.
When asked about his favorite part of the course he said it was challenging his fellow classmates and himself and the constant opportunity to learn. The supportive learning environment and camaraderie among classmates made the experience even more rewarding.
Looking ahead five years, he hopes to be on a boat enjoying himself.
When asked what advice he would give someone considering heavy equipment operation, his response was simple:
“Take the course. Learn everything you can because you’re always learning. Keep practising and you’ll become quicker, more efficient, and more confident.”
When it comes to choosing a favourite machine, he laughs and admits it’s impossible.
“It’s hard to pick one—I enjoy operating them all.”
Reflecting on his experience at OETIM, he speaks highly of the instructors and staff, describing them as knowledgeable, and invested in helping students succeed. Their willingness to answer questions, share real-world experience, and provide encouragement helped make the training both enjoyable and rewarding.
For anyone thinking about a career in construction or heavy equipment operation, he wouldn’t hesitate to recommend OETIM. The combination of practical training, simulator experience, employment preparation, and supportive instructors has helped prepare him for the next chapter of his career.
