Finding balance between passion and purpose 🏔️🔨
For Michael Barton, snowboarding has always been a huge part of life, from riding to coaching Indigenous people. However, he wanted a backup plan.
That’s when he found carpentry. 🪚
Michael started with Carpentry Level 1 at NTTC, then gained real-world experience working with Pioneer Carpentry in Whistler and realized carpentry would always be part of his life.
"The instructors, the staff and the support team really make for an excellent learning environment."
He returned to NTTC for Level 2, continuing to build his skills through hands-on learning at the North Vancouver Wastewater treatment plant.
Today, Michael balances working in carpentry and returning to the mountain seasonally, with plans to keep building his career in the trade.
And if Level 3 opens up? He says he'll be the first to sign up! 🔥
Michael’s journey shows you don’t have to choose one path, you can have the best of both words.

From trying it out to building a career 🔨✨
Owen Joseph started his journey in Youth in Trades, exploring what was possible. That first step led to Introduction to Carpentry, Level 1, AND Level 2.
After completing Level 1, Owen joined a work practicum with Ventana Construction which turned into a job. Working on projects in his own community made the experience even more meaningful. 🏠
He has been working with Ventana for over two years, continuing to build his skills and confidence on real job sites.
“The training has helped so much with growing my knowledge and understanding of the trade in and out of the workplace.”
Through every program, Owen found strong support, hands-on learning, and a community that kept him motivated.
Now, his goal is clear: becoming a Red Seal Carpenter.
Owen’s journey shows how one opportunity can turn into a long-term career, one step at a time. 💥
If you’re thinking about carpentry, we're accepting applications for our Introduction to Carpentry program until July 21st!
