Welcome back to Music Mondays!
This week features Brockton’s music directors, Mr. Dyck and Dr. Freeborn, reflecting on the many people who have helped shape Brockton School’s World Music Program over the past two decades.
The World Music Program is the product of many relationships. It reflects Mr. Dyck and Dr. Freeborn’s backgrounds as educators and musicians, as well as the influence of many mentors, artists, instrument makers, teachers, and community members who have shared their knowledge, perspectives, and friendship over the years.
As the program prepares for its upcoming South Africa tour, this week’s video is an opportunity to recognize some of the relationships, experiences, and learning that continue to shape the program today.

This week, we return to Jacob Mafuleni’s (Jacob Mafuleni) marimba workshop in Harare, Zimbabwe.
We are so grateful to Jacob and his team for crafting marimbas modelled after the instruments we play on at Brockton (Brockton School).

This week’s post features the founder of Ubuntu Learning Village, Dr. Moyo Rainos Mutamba, sharing a bit about the Ubuntu Free School.
The Ubuntu Free School, located in rural Zimbabwe, was co-founded by Dr. Mutamba and Olivia Caravaggio, an early childhood educator with graduate training in environmental studies.
The school combines academic learning with arts-centered, culturally relevant, and Indigenous knowledge, while providing meals and educational access to rural children.
Ubuntu is one of three incredible Zimbabwean organizations our school is partnering with, and you can find out more about these organizations on our “Building International Music Partnerships in Southern Africa” website.
Please consider donating to this wonderful project. 100% of donations support the creation of handcrafted marimbas in Zimbabwe that will travel to South Africa for performances at the SCL Festival before returning to Zimbabwe for ongoing shared use in youth music programs. Additional funds will support music education initiatives, student needs, and learning resources within our partner organizations.

It’s always fun when our senior ensemble members pop in to play a few tunes with our MYP Grade 10 Music class. Thanks, G and M!
Moments like these remind us that music-making is about mentorship, connection, and community across grade levels.
