Which brain do you want? š§
These SPECT scans from Amen Clinics show how different substances can affect blood flow and activity in the brain over time.
When we hear the word drugs, we usually think of substances outside the body. But our brains are constantly producing their own chemistry, always trying to return to homeostasis (balance).
Sometimes people use substances to shift how they feel, to calm anxiety, boost energy, or numb pain & we can also become subconsciously attached to our own internal chemistry; stress, adrenaline, betaendorphins or repetitive thinking patterns.
Addiction is often described as a chronic, repetitive behavior that continues despite causing suffering.
Understanding addiction through a brain health lens helps reduce stigma and opens the door to compassion, healing, and change.

With Valentineās Day and Family Day back-to-back here in BC, Iām reminded how ācelebrationā days can activate old attachment patterns
This isnāt weakness.Itās neuroscience.
Your brain is a pattern-detecting machine.
From birth, your nervous system was wiring itself based on your environment. The tone of voice in your home. The emotional availability of caregivers. The consistency (or inconsistency) of love. The safety of connection.
Those early experiences shaped:
⢠Your attachment style
⢠Your stress response
⢠Your sense of worth
⢠What your brain registers as ānormalā in relationships
The amygdala stores emotional memory.
The hippocampus links it to context.
The prefrontal cortex (when regulated) helps you respond rather than react.
However, when something today resembles something from back then ā even subtly ā your nervous system can fire as if itās happening all over again.
Thatās why hallmark days can feel heavier for some people.
Not because youāre broken,
because your brain learned to survive.
Hereās the empowering part:
Neuroplasticity is real.
When you bring awareness to your reactionsā¦
When you pause and regulate your nervous systemā¦
When you consciously choose a new awareness through thought, a boundary, or behaviourā¦
You are literally laying down new neural pathways.
Healing isnāt about blaming the past. Itās about updating the brainās operating system.
You didnāt choose your early programming. But you can choose whether you continue running it.
Peace comes from awareness + regulation + intentional response.
If this weekends hallmark days stirred something in you, thatās drama trauma (survival mode) - not truth.
Awareness is the first step in rewriting it, and the deeper truth? You are love. You are a divine soul & you can have peace in your mind. š§ āØ

šHeartbreak doesnāt shrink your heart. It stretches it.š
We donāt often talk about this part.
When you experience heartbreak ā loss, betrayal, disappointment, grief ā it can feel like something is breaking inside you, and in a way⦠something is.
But from a brain health perspective, pain isnāt just emotional ā itās neurological.
The same brain circuits that process physical pain also process social and emotional pain.
Which means heartbreak is real. It registers. It imprints.
But hereās the beautiful part:
When we move through heartbreak consciously ā not numbing it, not armoring over it, not letting ego turn it into bitterness ā our capacity expands.
The prefrontal cortex learns.
The limbic system integrates.
Our empathy deepens.Our discernment sharpens.
If we allow it, heartbreak refines us. It teaches us boundariest teaches us compassion. It teaches us what we value. It teaches us how deeply we can feel.
Pain can close a heart.
Or it can carve it wider.
The difference is awareness.
Every time you choose healing over hardening,
reflection over resentment,
growth over guardingā¦
your capacity for love increases.
Not just romantic love.
But love for self.
For truth.
For life.
Heartbreak isnāt proof you failed at love. Itās proof you were brave enough to feel it.
