According to sport psychologist, Dr. Stan Beecham, “People who are really successful will tell you their definition of success is their response to failure, and they would argue that you have to have failure. In other words, there’s no such thing of success without failure.”

“the blessing in the gift of sport is that kids learn that life is not all about fun and feeling good and being happy. Being upset is part of life. And kids learn to cope with being upset and disappointed after they lose or miss the game-winning shot. We're not going to run to the rescue and take that pain away. The heartbreak is real.”

Yesterday my daughter's team had their first playoff game where the stakes were high - the winners of the playoffs will get to go to the BC Provincials. I asked Helen if she would be open to some mindset coaching before the game and she agreed (with no eye rolling...success!). Our coaching centred on 3 things: setting specific game goals, developing a mantra, and a visualization exercise for how to recover if things went sideways during the game.
Helen is the team's goalie, and using her new strategies, she had a great game, letting in only one goal all night and her team won the game. (insert wild cheering, ringing cowbells and blow horns!) The same outcome may have happened without mindset coaching, but one thing is certain - she went into that game with a specific focus, strong motivation, high confidence and an excellent plan to recover and reset if things didn't go as planned on the ice. It took us 20 minutes to have this coaching session. It doesn't have to be a lengthy process - it has to be high impact and meaningful to resonate.
I share this personal story to demonstrate how powerful coaching can be. I know we all want to give the people we love in our life the best chance of reaching their personal goals and successes, and coaching is a wonderful way to help them on that journey.
