The award's introduction featured remarks from CapU alumna, filmmaker and actor Gigi Saul Guerrero, who spoke about the role CapU played in launching her career. Motion Picture Arts chair Michael Thoma accepted the honour on behalf of the university from presenting sponsor RBC.

The celebration also recognized the depth of CapU talent across the screen industry, with 60-plus alumni nominated and more than a dozen alumni and faculty members receiving Leo Awards honours.

Congratulations to our 2014 alumna, Sophy Romvari, on the continued success of her debut feature, Blue Heron!

The film has received widespread critical acclaim and was recently included on The New York Times' list of the Best Movies of the Year So Far.

The story: Told in part from the point of view of 8-year-old Sasha, the film follows her family’s move from Hungary to Vancouver Island in the 1990s and her older half-brother Jeremy’s increasingly precarious behavior. This debut feature by Sophy Romvari blends her own history with fiction.

Wilkinson’s (NY Time reviewer) take: “It can be tempting to tell stories about broken families and mental health struggles with a gloss of romantic fatalism, but there’s none of that here — just an aching desire to understand what Jeremy was experiencing” and why Sasha’s “parents made the choices they did.”
