The Perfect Job! It’s out there! Now wherever you are in your adventures to getting to that dream job, there are things that can set YOU apart from the rest!

Whether it’s your first job application or you’re a seasoned veteran there are a few things that will set your resume apart. Check out our blog post With our top 10 (link in bio).

We’ll share a few with you here each day. Here’s our first 3.

1. NO SPELLING ERRORS: A spelling error on your resume is like the “kiss of death.” - One error and there’s a good chance your resume will be tossed. Watch out for easy misses like the difference between: There, their, and they’re. And definitely don’t get caught with our favorite spelling mistake: ‘Emplyoment.â€™đŸ€Šâ€â™€ïž

2. NAMING YOUR RESUME FILE: Make sure that when you upload your resume to an online job posting your file name is relevant and doesn’t say something silly like. ‘Sassy Cats Resume version 42.doc’ A good file name would include your name and the role such as “Max Smith Resume – Marketing Specialist role.pdf”

3. SEND AS A PDF: Upload your resume as a PDF. If you send the file as a word doc you risk your font not showing up correctly, or the formatting being off. A PDF ensure the reader will be able to view your resume the exact same way you see it.

🎉 👏 You made! Tax Day CONGRATS!! Woooh! If you haven’t filed yet you’ve got a few more hours.

Do you owe money? Just remember your payment to CRA must be received today. If you’re paying through your financial institution the transaction needs to be completed by end of day! If deadline day falls on a weekend over which you make a payment it’s still ok, because it’s counted as the first business day back!

Tax Tip: If you owe $2 or less you don’t have to pay, so slip that toonie into your piggy bank

What's a T4? It's a summary of all the money you earned along with the deductions you paid through work. Every employer is required to provide you with a T4 by the end of February. The document might at first look a bit intimidating. It's got a lot of boxes and some of them have numbers in them. Well this document contains the majority of the information you need to file a tax return, and you will need to input these numbers into different parts of a tax return.

DID YOU KNOW: Your employer sends an identical T4 to the CRA?? So no fudging the numbers...cause they will know!

Want to learn more about how to read a T4? Our Real Life 101 courses have a module dedicated to reading a t4 and actually learning how to file a simple tax return! The CRA websits is also a great tool if you want to do your own learning!

Do you get excited about the idea of a tax refund? đŸ’” Well it is exciting, but in a way it isn't that great. It basically means the gov't collected too much tax from you during the year and has to pay you back. The bigger the refund the more interest, investment, and spending opportunities you lost out on throughout the year. (Remember money in your pocket now is better than money in your pocket later)....So there's an incentive to file as early in the year as possible to get that money back! 💰

In Canada Personal income tax is progressive, which means you pay a higher rate of tax as you earn more income. For example you pay 15% on the first 49K and then 20.5% on the next 49K, 26% on the next portion and so forth till you hit 33% which is payable on everything over 216K. For a complete breakdown of all the tax rates check out the CRA website

So how do you actually file?
There’s quite a few ways to prepare and submit your taxes and it’s not as intimidating as you would think. A lot of people with simple tax situations, file their own taxes (for free). CRA accepts paper tax returns (think old school filling out a tax booklet), or through NETFILE which is CRA’s online filing system (online tax software like or tax connect to NETFILE and let you fill in your taxes online and then submit).

You can complete your own taxes, or you can authorize somebody else to file for you such as by hiring an accountant, using a community volunteer tax clinic, or even by using the CRA automated phone line file my return.

So what's the point of taxes? Well they pay for different things. Some deductions get saved up to pay you during retirement, some save up to pay you if you ever lose your job, and others pay for things like city roads.
CPP: You start paying this on earning after you turn 18, and it pays out if you retire, become disabled or die.
EI: Is there for if you need it. It helps pay you if you lose your job, can't work due to sickness, pregnancy, having a baby, or if you need to care for a person thats seriously ill.
INCOME TAX: On the other hand pays for facilities, services and programs such as: libraries, parks, garbage pickup, hospitals, roads, schools, and social assistance

What are Personal taxes? So you work, you get paid, but at the end of the day you don’t get to put all of the money you earned in your pocket. Why? That’s because, there are tax deductions. You’re employer has to calculate 3 main types of deductions and then they hold them back from your pay and send them to the Canada Revenue Agency? Here’s what gets taken:

1. Canada Pension Plan contributions (CPP)
2. Employment Insurance Premiums (EI)
3. Income tax deductions (federal and provincial)

Next up: where does this money go?

💰 It’s TAX WEEK and we’re kicking off by getting down to the basics. The deadline to file your taxes is April 30th. It’s June 15th if you’re self employed, but don’t be fooled, if you’re self employed and owe money, you still need to pay by April 30 to avoid penalties even though you can officially file June 15th!

REAL LIFE 101 TIP: If you’re expecting a refund (that’s money the government owes you back), the earlier you file your taxes, the earlier you get that money back in your pocket (Cha Ching đŸ’”). Opposite is true if you owe money...so in that case it might make sense for you to wait as close to April 30 to file as possible 😉.

LIFE INSPIRED US: There are some things that we are expected to just know as adults, and although we have a vague understanding, nobody graduates highschool (or even University) with an advanced degree in some of the things the real world throws your way. 🌎

What's a T4? How do you do your taxes? What's is the diff between an RRSP and TFSA, How do you apply for a credit card? When do you need insurance? How do you get your resume noticed? What’s a mortgage? How do you prepare a Will?

These are the types of things our Real Life 101 courses teach! Perfect for young adults grade 10-12 or new grads. Welcome to Tackle Tomorrow Applied Learning where our goal is to prepare you for your tomorrow!
