Our current education system is not enough to provide adequate artistic training. Music is not for budget cutting. Music is the medium to connect our consciousness and subconsciousness, music cultivates temperament and individuality, among other necessary growth skills.
I try to bring more than just piano skills to my students. Because our children need this.

Think of music as the medium of input and output, and the magic playground for all senses to come together. Music learning is not to fulfill any certification requirement or ends there but is important for a person’s growth and most of our creative abilities comes from fantasies and dreams than tutoring.
One of my favorite folk tunes! Today I had this in my head for no reason, so I sat and played it. I always share with my students that for me, I think the most expressive interval is minor 2nd (semitone). Well this folk melody starts with that, what do you think?

My students always ask: why do I have to practice scales? Hah, i have a long answer but I know it doesn’t matter because what matters is finding ways to make it enjoyable!
This was Student O’s on-spot improvisation on a simple F major scale which she just learned. Note the smart move of tapping beats on the fall board before started playing. And how she intuitively structured her phrases! And it sounded beautiful!
This is how I want my students to be: creative, problem solver and ability to find innate musical instincts.

Does mere finger technique represent complete music education?
A parent asked me after a trial lesson why I was not teaching playing with five fingers. I answered, “Let’s start with feeling the rhythms with the big muscles first.”
I think students should be trained as musicians before becoming excellent instrumentalists. You don’t need to know an instrument to feel and express music, but you can’t be an excellent instrumentalist if you play all the right notes but not the music.
Such a high level of artistry in sound is a long term training from lesson one.
