🐸 Frogs in Anishinaabemowin! 🐸

Did you know omagakii is the Anishinaabemowin word for frog?

This week, we're highlighting two different frogs found in Ontario:

🌿 Gidagimakakii — Leopard Frog
🌿 Ggoozimakakii — Tree Frog

Leopard frogs spend the winter buried in mud at the bottoms of bodies of water, while tree frogs spend most of their adult lives out of the water. 🌱

Learning the names of the animals around us is another way to connect with and strengthen Anishinaabemowin.

🐢 Turtles in Anishinaabemowin 🐢

Did you know there are different Anishinaabemowin words for different turtle species?

🌿 Miskwaadesi — Painted Turtle
🌿 Mikinaak — Snapping Turtle

Painted turtles can be found throughout the Great Lakes region and are connected to Truth within the Seven Grandfather Teachings. Snapping turtles, meanwhile, spend the winter in brumation—a reptile's version of hibernation!

Learning the names of the animals around us is one way we can continue strengthening and celebrating Anishinaabemowin.

Today, the Anishinabek Education System had the pleasure of attending the 8th Annual Unity Gathering hosted by Chippewas of Kettle & Stony Point First Nation!

This year’s theme, “Together in Unity – Maawnjiidendamdaa,” brought community members together for a day filled with connection, teachings, workshops, activities and time spent together on the land.

Our team was grateful for the opportunity to connect with community members, share information about the Anishinabek Education System and take part in such a meaningful gathering.

Chi-miigwech to Chippewas of Kettle & Stony Point First Nation for welcoming us and for bringing everyone together for a wonderful day!
