The NUFA Fall Social was unquestionably a big hit with so many of our full-time and part-time faculty members coming out to connect with colleagues, meet newly appointed members, and share a wonderful dinner together!

We were delighted to welcome many of our newest members to NUFA, hired this year at Nipissing U, and we celebrated this year’s retirees, who gave so much to the university for so many years.

Special thanks to the Carriage House, Powassan, for an absolutely delicious meal! And thanks Ali Hatef for organizing another super event!

On September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Nipissing University is closed to provide its faculty, staff, and students an opportunity to reflect upon the lasting harms and legacies for Indigenous peoples of the residential school system. NUFA urges its members, and all Canadians, to embrace this opportunity while continuing to work towards the goal of reconciliation as outlined in the Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Nipissing U faculty members Tyson Stewart of Indigenous Studies and Kirsten Greer of History and Geography spent four days on N’dakimenan with a wonderful group of students as part of a land-based field camp.

The Temagami/N’dakimenan Colloquium is an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural academic conference and land-based learning experience that broadly explores the socio-ecological relations between people and place as well as Indigenous-led efforts to reclaim history and culture.

The four-day event at Camp Wanapitei focuses on the history and contemporary issues related to Anishinaabeg self-determination and relations to land and water in N’Dakimenan, the traditional territory of the Temagami First Nation (TFN) and Teme Augama Anishinaabe (TAA) in Northern Ontario.

NUFA president Robin Gendron and OPSEU Local 608 president Kyle Charron shared a moment of solidarity at today’s gathering in support of OPSEU/SEFPO Local 608 as they negotiate a new collective agreement with Nipissing U.

OPSEU Local 608 represents support staff across all aspects of the university. As faculty, we couldn’t do what we do without staff supporting us in a hundred different ways.

NUFA members were honoured to join OPSEU 608 at today’s solidarity gathering, and we stand with them in their fight for a fair deal.

All faculty are invited to our monthly Brown Bag Lunch! Bring your lunch and catch up with Robin and fellow NUFA members in the Teaching Hub. Newly appointed faculty members are especially welcome! Come say hello and share some solidarity. The Teaching Hub even has an espresso machine!

Heads Up: There is ALSO a solidarity rally for OPSEU on Thursday at 12:30, so if anyone wants to eat a little early and/or scarf their lunch and hoof it to the library for the rally, some of us will be doing that too! Wear blue for the rally!

Part two of a series on Selwyn Dewdney and Norval Morrisseau featuring input from NUFA member Jonathan Pitt: “For someone visiting pictograph sites today, perhaps the most respectful mindset is to think of yourself not as discovering something hidden, but as being a guest at a place that has long been known, valued, and cared for by others. That perspective tends to foster both curiosity and humility, and it aligns well with guidance from many Indigenous communities about visiting these places of spiritual significance.”

Did you know full-time faculty will be negotiating a new collective agreement with the university in the months ahead? In preparation, NUFA’s bargaining team attended a special training course by Canadian Association of University Teachers

CAUT’s courses encompass collective bargaining, grievance handling, preparing for job action, communications, and labour action for equity on campus. They gather members from across Canada to learn from each other and learn together.

Our team at NUFA brings a wealth of experience to the table, and we’re so grateful to CAUT for sharing their knowledge on today’s trends in university negotiations.
