🫎Nishnaabe Harvesting Camp 🫎

What an incredible week on the land! Three of our Nbisiing Secondary School students participated in Nishnaabe Harvesting Camp, gaining valuable land-based experience and connecting with their culture.

Although our students didn’t harvest a moose this year, each group had the incredible opportunity to hear and see moose, as it was an action packed week!

Students learned how to pack for harvest camp, set up camp, track big game, understand wind direction, and develop the skills and patience that come with harvesting. They also took on daily camp responsibilities, including preparing meals, keeping their camp tidy, piling wood, and working together as a team throughout the week.

One of the greatest lessons was understanding that harvesting takes time, effort, patience, and respect for the land. It’s not always about the harvest, but the knowledge, experiences, and teachings gained along the way.

On Wednesday, we hosted APSIP (Aboriginal Post Secondary Information Program)! Students had the opportunity to speak with recruiters from 14 different universities, colleges, and skilled trades programs from across Ontario.

Students had a chance to ask questions about a variety of programs, explore potential future pathways, and even pick up a bit of swag!

A quick reminder that Nbisiing will be closed to in-person learning next Tuesday, October 13 - Friday, October 16.
These days are organized to give students and their families a chance to participate in fall harvesting activities while still having access to classwork. Support is available remotely; please phone the school to organize one-on-one support for your student.

📚 Distance Learning Week at Nbisiing Secondary School

A reminder that Nbisiing Secondary School will be closed for in-person learning from Tuesday, October 13 to Friday, October 16. During this week, students will continue their learning from home with assignments and activities provided by their teachers.

These distance learning days are scheduled to give families the flexibility to take part in traditional fall hunting activities and spend time on the land, while students can still continue their learning. We know how important this time of year is for many families in our community, and we’re happy to provide an opportunity for students to learn both at home and on the land.

Staff will be available virtually throughout the week to support students with their learning. Parents and guardians can contact the school to arrange a virtual support session if their child needs additional help.

Candidates for North Bay City Council visited Grade 10 students in Em's Civics and Careers class this morning. They discussed the importance of accessibility in North Bay, as well as how taxes are used for services. Thank you to Justine Mallah, Dave Dale, Joanne Brosseau and Joanna Kristolaitis for visiting us at Nbisiing!

“What is something you’ve always wanted to learn how to do?”

We believe it’s important to put learning in the hands of students and give them a voice in what they explore. Upon popular request, our Grade 11/12 Art class is diving into realism!

Students are building their observation and drawing skills while learning how to capture proportion, value, texture, light and detail—and discovering just how much they’re capable of with a little patience and practice.

Our Grade 9 Art students are continuing to enjoy the beautiful fall weather by taking their creativity outdoors! This week, students explored Earth Art, using natural materials found in their surroundings to experiment with colour, pattern, and space. It was a great opportunity to connect with the land while expanding our understanding of where, how, and with what art can be created.

As our school is closed to observe Truth and Reconciliation Day, we are reflecting on our activities from earlier this week.

On Monday, students were given their own piece of square fabric to customize with a word, slogan, drawings, or symbols that honour and acknowledge Truth and Reconciliation. Each year, we are going to repeat this process to eventually sew each square into one whole quilt that will resemble our school's equity and awareness about Truth and Reconciliation.

This activity was important because it is a way for everyone to contribute to something meaningful as a community, and a way for us to come together as a school to spread awareness, connectivity, and mindfulness.

As this quilt grows year after year, it will stand as a living testament to our school's enduring commitment to healing, education, and lasting reconciliation.
