🧡 Together, we honour the Survivors of the Indian Residential School system, remember the children who never returned home, and acknowledge the lasting intergenerational impacts these institutions continue to have on Indigenous families and communities.
This week, on September 30, the Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board (NPSC) observes Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
At NPSC, we firmly uphold the message Every Child Matters and recognize the importance of reflecting deeply on this painful piece of Canada’s history. Today and every day, we honour the Survivors of the Indian Residential School system, remember the children who never returned home, and acknowledge the lasting intergenerational impacts these institutions continue to have on Indigenous families and communities.
As a Catholic education community, we recognize our responsibility to continue learning the truth about the legacy of residential schools. We are committed to providing year-round, age-appropriate learning that honours the inherent dignity of every person and prioritizes truth when teaching about the harms and injustices of the residential school system.
Throughout the week, students and staff across NPSC will participate in a variety of school-based and community activities that support learning, reflection, healing, and remembrance. These opportunities include reading and discussing Indigenous-authored books and resources, engaging in classroom projects and reflective conversations, and making personal commitments to respect and reconciliation. Together, these experiences help deepen our understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, perspectives, and the legacy of residential schools, while encouraging us to reflect on how we can contribute to a more just and compassionate future.
