I often get asked what my favourite age to teach is, and I really can’t decide! I have taught ages 2-75, and every student comes with a unique experience. It is never too early or late to start! Piano is such a versatile instrument, and learning how to play supports cognitive function in a way that benefits everyone!

I am not diagnosed with ADHD, but the only time my brain can close all 15 tabs is when I’m playing 🎹 I have seen kids completely zone out and get into a mesmerizing flow that their parents have never seen in them before, and it makes me so happy 🥹 I just love sharing my outlet!!

Do you or your child struggle with attention and focus? Here’s what my lessons have looked like in the past to cater to my students’ specific learning styles:
-answering theory questions while doing literal cartwheels in my living room
-taking regular 1 minute wiggle or breathing breaks
-extra motivation and stickers while my student insisted on getting something PERFECT
-providing time to get some sillies out AND clearly but gently communicating when it’s time to learn
-solving the puzzle of how to help a student grasp a specific concept TOGETHER, even if it takes weeks! We will find a way to make it make sense to YOU!

Playing piano is NOT a ‘cure’ for ADHD, but it CAN help manage it and develop skills that can be transferred to other areas of life. Here’s a great article that dives into this further:

I’m going to call this series “stuff in the studio that makes my students say ‘what’s that?’”, because there is plenty in my teaching space that sparks conversations about music outside of piano 🎶 Often part of our first lesson is just walking around the room, seeing what we can see, especially if they’re feeling shy or nervous. There’s some great ice breakers around here!

Part 1: My Grandparents’ stereo! It plays records, cassettes, and the radio. I feel so lucky to have it, and I love showing my students how it works!
