This is so unfortunately true, particularly in this region. Families need to travel long distances and endure long wait times to get a diagnosis in order to access supports/funding for disabilities. So much time and effort involved.

Last week I had a wonderful experience. I was invited to attend Camp Hermosa on the shores of Lake Huron to share some knowledge & expertise with parents/caregivers who have opened their families and hearts through adoption. I was there for three and a half days. I'm so grateful for the chance to provide perspective, ideas & strategies for supporting their kids. I'm very humbled by what they were willing to share with me and in awe of the unconditional love and effort they put into their unique families. My thanks to Camp Hermosa for having me❤

Memory difficulties in FASD are not simply about forgetting. They reflect differences in how the brain takes in, stores, retrieves, and uses information. A person may fully understand something one day and be unable to recall or apply it the next—not because they don't care, but because the information is no longer easily accessible.

Unlike ordinary forgetfulness, repeating information or increasing consequences often does not solve the problem. The brain may need external supports to bridge the gap between intention and action. When we assume that missed appointments, unpaid bills, forgotten rules, or broken agreements are due to laziness, irresponsibility, or a lack of motivation, we overlook the underlying neurodevelopmental disability and miss the opportunity to provide effective support.

Understanding this difference allows us to shift from expecting the brain to remember everything to building systems that help it succeed. Calendars, reminders, written instructions, routines, visual cues, and supportive follow-up are examples of accommodations that help people with FASD function more independently.
