“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” — Picasso
He also famously spoke about learning to paint like Raphael, but needing a lifetime to learn to draw like a child.
And I think about that a lot.
Children create before they learn to judge themselves.
Before they worry if it’s “good.”
Before they compare.
Before they decide they’re not artistic.
They explore. They experiment. They make.
🍄🎨
That’s the heart of process art.
It’s not about every child following the same steps toward the same finished product. It’s about giving them materials, possibilities and encouragement — and then making room for their ideas to emerge.
The mixing. The wondering. The unexpected choices. The “what happens if I try this?”
That is the art.
Maybe our job isn’t always to teach children HOW to make art.
Maybe sometimes it’s simply to give them the freedom to create — and protect that little part of them that already knows how 🧠🧐
Around here, we really do believe it:
Anyone can be an artist. ❤️
