New Assistant Principals in Black Gold School Division have access to mentors for the first time this year. The division and the administrators group worked together to create partnerships that will support new leaders as they learn the role.

Mentors and mentees met together on September 29. Because it happened to be the day many schools were honoring Orange Shirt Day, participants took the opportunity to share their vision and goals using a traditional Indigenous way; sitting in a circle and sharing ideas.

New Assistant Principals will gather several more times throughout the year.

October 5 is World Teachers' Day. On this day we consider the difference our teachers make every day for Black Gold students.

Thank you to each of you for your commitment and dedication - and the way you 'Inspire Success' with our students!

An educator named Colleen Wilcox aptly said that "Teaching is the greatest act of optimism." Thank you teachers for that - and for everything you do!

New Sarepta Elementary School students enjoyed dancing and tapping along to traditional Métis music a few days ago. Métis fiddler Brianna Lizotte, and musician and educator Ethan Graves, gave a performance that got everyone moving - and learning about the culture and history of the Métis people.

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation we are reflecting on the history of Indigenous people in Canada.

The Board of Trustees and Black Gold School Division recognize the responsibility education has to acknowledge the truth of residential schools and their lasting impacts on Indigenous children, families and communities. Truth must come before reconciliation, and listening and learning are essential parts of that journey.

As a Board, we know reconciliation must be more than words. It must be reflected in our priorities, our policies and the decisions we make.

We are committed to listening to Indigenous voices, strengthening relationships and working alongside Indigenous communities to shape what meaningful reconciliation looks like within Black Gold.

Black Gold Trustee Devonna Klaassen was one of the guests at a recent “State of the Town” event in Devon.

With three schools in Devon, Black Gold School Division is a key part of the community.

Trustee Klaassen represented the division, and was pleased to hear about growth in the community, as well as community feedback that indicates residents are happy to live there.

A look back to last Friday, to Thorsby Elementary School staff on Professional Development Day.

There is a lot of new science about how young learners build literacy skills. The staff at TES were learning about an approach to teaching literacy that takes the new science into account. FlyLeaf targets specific skills as young children learn, and it builds students skills in developmentally appropriate ways.

“The most powerful part of the day was having a space where staff could learn alongside one another, be curious, and feel comfortable asking questions,” says Amy Hodge, Principal. “The PD connects directly to what teachers and support staff are and will be doing in their classrooms. We are excited about the positive impact this will have for our students.”

Nearly 3,000 Black Gold students tuned in to a special online learning opportunity this week.

Black Gold hosted Métis fiddler Brianna Lizotte and musician and educator Ethan Graves online, allowing students in 105 classrooms to enjoy a learning opportunity.

Through fiddle music, stories about the Métis sash and beadwork, and lessons in the Red River Jig and spoon rhythms, students learned how Métis traditions are shared through music, dance and family gatherings.
