On March 10, we recognize and honour Harriet Tubman, who helped bring hundreds of slaves from America to freedom. Born into slavery in the early 1820s, Tubman escaped the Maryland farm where she and her family were kept and then travelled alone more than 100 kilometres to the free state of Pennsylvania.
She made her way to Canada, making a home in St. Catharines on North Street, close to the British Methodist Episcopal Church, Salem Chapel. Though she lived in Niagara for less than a decade, her influence was significant both for the black community and the church.

It’s a day to recognize these ongoing inequities, honour lived experiences, and support efforts that advance meaningful change.
