Some people work at a nursery. Others become part of its roots.

After beginning his journey at NVK on April 16, 1984, Paul DeGroot is retiring this Friday after more than four decades of dedicated service.

To say Paul knows plants would be an understatement.
He knew where nearly every plant in the nursery was, how much water it needed, how often it tipped over, and probably what it had for breakfast.
If a truck left the yard without being tarped... chances are Paul would somehow know before it reached the highway.

His catalogue? It wasn’t just a sales tool—it was literally his back support.

Need the Latin name of an obscure shrub? Ask Paul.
Need a completely random fact that no one else on earth seems to know? Ask Paul.
Need someone who cared deeply about doing things the right way? Definitely ask Paul.

Beyond NVK, Paul’s commitment to serving others has been just as remarkable. Through Landscape Ontario, overseas volunteer work, and faithful service in his church, he has invested his time and talents into making a difference wherever he went.

Paul, thank you for your relentless pursuit of excellence, your incredible plant knowledge, your attention to detail, your passion and discipline. You have made this nursery a better place for it. You are truly one of a kind, and NVK won’t quite be the same without you.

May God richly bless you in this next chapter. We pray He grants you good health, joy, and many opportunities to enjoy His amazing creation.
