SHOULD PARENTS BE ALLOWED TO COACH THEIR CHILD FROM THE SIDELINES DURING CLASS?

This one should get interesting. As parents, we want the absolute best for our kids. We want to help them, encourage them and sometimes when we see something happening in class, our first instinct is to correct it from the sidelines. I completely understand that.

But here’s the question… does that actually HELP the child, or can it make it harder for them to learn?

When a child is on the floor, they’re learning a lot more than just punches, kicks and techniques. They’re learning to listen to their instructor, stay focused, solve problems, make mistakes, accept corrections and figure things out for themselves. Sometimes struggling with something for a few minutes is actually part of the lesson.

At the same time, parents know their children better than anyone. So should there be situations where a parent’s input is welcomed? Or once class begins, should the coaching be left completely to the instructor?

There are definitely two sides to this one, and I want to hear BOTH. Parents, instructors and martial artists—what do YOU think? Should parents be allowed to coach from the sidelines during class? YES or NO? And most importantly…WHY?
