Are you looking to give your child the best possible start during their formative years of development? At FELA, we provide parents with peace of mind and confidence knowing their children are being nurtured in an educational setting rich in values and experiences with the highest standard of care. We have proudly been serving families in the Niagara region for 12 years and recently accepted the Platinum Readers Choice award for top daycare. Since founded in 2009, Fernwood Academy has been a place where children have grown intellectually, socially and emotionally. Individual strengths and interests are encouraged which aim to develop our students sense of self, confidence and independence. Our curriculum follows a combination of Montessori and traditional teaching methods which have proven to provide children with a strong early learning foundation including Kindergarten preparedness. This approach to learning covers all areas of cognitive and social development including language arts, math, geography, music, science, movement, social/environmental responsibility and practical life skills. Our student to teacher ratio is 5:2 which highlights the importance of having two full time providers to ensure that our families are never without care and that children are never left unattended at any time throughout the day. While small class size allows for us to provide individual attention to each student and for students to build stronger relationships with their peers. At Fernwood Academy, our holistic methodologies provide children with a wonderful sense of belonging, which allows students to achieve their greatest potential when learning about the world around them! Yesterday, September 30th was Orange Shirt Day & National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day asks us to acknowledge and help to heal the tremendous loss, sadness and intergenerational trauma caused by Canadian residential schools.

Our class wore orange shirts and painted symbolic rocks to honour just one child who died due to the residential school system. Additionally, we made a monetary donation to Indspire, a national Indigenous charity that invests in the education of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people across Canada. Indspire provides financial support, delivers programs and shares resources to help Indigenous students achieve their highest potential.

The worst part of this job is saying goodbye. 😭💙 Ugh… what an emotional day.

Even though we know Nathan & Ada are more than ready for their next big adventure in kindergarten, we’re sure going to miss their little personalities, their silliness, their laughter, and all the joy they brought into our classroom. 🥹

Watching these little ones grow, learn, and become ready for their next chapter is such a bittersweet privilege. We are so incredibly proud of them, but selfishly…wish we could keep them just a little longer. 💙

We had so much fun with this hands-on spring planting activity! After reading the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and using our imaginations to recreate the story in the classroom, we extended our learning with a fun science project.

The children planted real bean seeds and learned all about what plants need to grow, including soil, sunlight, and water. They eagerly watched their beanstalks sprout day by day, making exciting observations along the way. The fairy tale theme added an extra layer of magic, but the real learning came from caring for their own plants and seeing the growing process firsthand.

This activity also helped teach important preschool concepts such as growth, patience, responsibility, problem-solving, and imagination. As the children cared for their beanstalks, they learned that growing things take time, attention, and nurturing. Through hands-on exploration, they were able to connect the lessons from the story to real-life experiences, making learning both meaningful and memorable.

Not only was this a wonderful opportunity to explore early science concepts, but it also created an adorable keepsake for families to enjoy at home. 🌱✨💚

This week we explored the fascinating world of insects and bugs! 🐞🦋🐜

We learned about insect body parts, how they move, where they live, and the special things different bugs can do. Through hands-on activities, discussions, and exploration, our little learners practiced new vocabulary, observation skills, and early science concepts while letting their curiosity lead the way.

So much meaningful learning happens through curiosity, wonder, and exploration 💚 🔍
