Happy World Teachers’ Day to the OCTs we are proud to work alongside every day.

OCTs and CUPE 1734 education workers are partners in publicly funded education. Together, we bring different skills, experience and care to our schools, all with the same goal of supporting students and helping them thrive.

Before the first student walks through the doors and long after the last bell rings, school custodians are doing the work that keeps our schools safe, clean and running.

Their work touches every part of a school day. They maintain the spaces where students learn, protect the health and safety of everyone in the building, and carry enormous responsibility for keeping schools functional, welcoming and ready for whatever the day brings.

On National Custodial Workers Day, we recognize custodians who make our schools work every single day.

Our custodial staff deserve respect, proper staffing, and working conditions that reflect the value of the work they do.

CUPE 1734’s President, Lead Steward, and 2nd VP/WSIB Lead are at the Rise Up 4 Injured and Ill Workers Conference today, continuing the fight against your unsafe workplaces.

A major focus: claim suppression.

For us, this includes the pressure members face to keep injuries and incidents off the record.

Every time an administrator tells you not to complete an Accident/Incident Report, discourages reporting, or dismisses workplace violence as a student’s “baseline behaviour,” that keeps the hazards invisible.

Calling it “baseline behaviour” does not make workplace violence any less real, any less unsafe, or any less reportable.

With the appalling level of workplace violence CUPE 1734 members are being subjected to each day it’s never been more important to:
DOCUMENT. EVERY. INCIDENT.

Unsafe work is not part of your job.

Being assaulted is not part of the job - and neither is being pressured into silence.

Today, we honour the children taken from their families, communities, languages, cultures, and homes through the residential school system.

We remember the children who never returned home and hold space for Survivors, their families, and generations who continue to carry the impacts.

Truth must come before reconciliation.

Wearing orange is more than a colour. It is a commitment to listen, learn, remember, and acknowledge the truth and its ongoing impacts on Indigenous Peoples.

Reconciliation is not a single day or symbol. It is the work we choose every day: challenging racism, respecting Indigenous voices, honouring treaties, protecting Indigenous rights, and creating a future where every child is valued, respected, safe, and free to be who they are.

September 30 is Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Purple represents our solidarity as education workers. Tomorrow, solidarity means making space for something bigger.

It’s Gender Equality Week

Gender equity means equal opportunity, equal respect, equal voice and equal access to participate and lead.

Except if you’re an education worker in the York Region District School Board, where a predominantly female workforce faces alarming levels of violence and harassment.

In the first three weeks of school, CUPE 1734 members reported close to 400 violence-related incidents and we know that workplace violence is routinely underreported.

Our members are being sexually assaulted, face death threats, are subjected to racist hate and physically attacked sometimes daily - simply to earn a living supporting kids.

AND YOUR KIDS ARE WATCHING.

Students see women punched, kicked, bitten, threatened and sexually assaulted, while those responsible for protecting workers fail to stop it.

The lesson being taught in today’s schools: women’s bodies are expendable, and their safety is optional.
