Dear Ontario Government,

The federal government has never taken on the initiative of providing childcare and education for our youngest and most vulnerable population in Canada. Now they would like to step up to provide these services for ten dollars a day and we applaud that, but they are doing so without including the entrepreneurs who supported the system when they wouldn’t. Small business owners, primarily women, have stepped up to provide high quality care and education for children
under the age of six, since the beginning of this country. We have invested our life savings on these businesses and dedicated years building these childcare centres. We provided a needed service and now the government wants to take away our investments.

The federal government is making deals with the provinces that include putting the private childcare centres out of business. In Nova Scotia, the childcare centres have been told that if they choose to continue to run as a private centre, they will now receive zero funding or government support and will lose all their current wage and operating subsidies. Meanwhile, the government will provide funding to all other centres around them so that there is no way that they can possibly compete in the market or afford to hire early childhood educators, essentially
bankrupting their companies. Their other option is to switch to a
not-for-profit model, making them an employee of their own company. Their business can no longer be sold so they lose their investment and their retirement. Their final option is to sign a contract with the government where they are provided funding, but it is capped without taking into consideration the different amount of rent each centre pays. One centre may pay 30,000 dollars a month, while another pays 5,000 dollars a month in rent, yet their fees are capped at the same price. This will put most of the companies out of business. In addition, as part of the deal offered, they will no longer be permitted to sell their businesses, so they will lose their investments and retirement in the process. To put it bluntly, their own government is forcing them out of business and stealing their investments from them. This is not the
Canada that we grew up in or believed in, this is what communist countries do. We have done nothing wrong. We stepped up and provided a service that the government refused to provide, we provided quality care for so many families who adore us, we worked through the pandemic as the schools moved to online services and continued to provide care to keep our economy going, we invested all of our savings into these centres and gave up other career opportunities because we love working with children and now the federal government wants to
thank us by putting us out of business. We are counting on our Ontario government to protect us from the federal government as you

negotiate the Universal Child Care plan for our province. We are hoping that you ensure that the wording in the agreement allows for the funding to include private childcare centres now and in the future, no matter what party oversees Ontario. You need our centres to provide enough care and we are happy to take part in a fair agreement with the province. We want our families to benefit from this program. Our businesses were started honorably and legally, and we deserve
to be grandfathered into this program. If we sign on to a deal with the
province to be included in this plan, then we need to be allowed to remain private companies so we can ensure the quality of our centres. The caps on fees need to be based on a sliding scale, taking into consideration the rent and expenses of each centre. In addition, we need to be able to sell our companies to protect our personal investments. We hope that you will protect our interests and believe that you will stand up for our rights. We look forward to working with you in the future, providing quality and affordable care to the families in Ontario.
