Today, JIBC campus flags are lowered to mark the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism.
On June 23, 1985, the bombing of Air India Flight 182 took the lives of 329 people, the majority of whom were Canadians. As we remember those who were lost, we acknowledge the lasting impact of this tragedy on families, friends, and communities across Canada.
This day also serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance, resilience, and the ongoing efforts of those dedicated to protecting public safety and security.

Many thanks to JIBC Resident Elder Larry Grant and co-author Scott Steedman who discussed their book, Reconciling: A Lifelong Struggle to Belong, at our New Westminster campus yesterday.
Elder Grant’s fascinating stories of his life in Vancouver as a man of Musqueam and Chinese heritage was a fitting contribution to JIBC’s celebration of National Indigenous History Month.
Thank you also to members of JIBC staff and faculty, as well as the wider community, who attended, creating a dynamic audience for Elder Grant and Scott Steedman’s engaging anecdotes.

On Wednesday, we lowered flags across our campuses and locations to honour the line-of-duty death of Const. Tarun Bali of the Ontario Provincial Police. Flags will remain at half-mast for Const. Bali as a mark of respect and remembrance.
Thursday, we learned of the tragic line-of-duty death of Const. Marc Pinizzotto, 43, of the Toronto Police Service (TPS), who was fatally shot Thursday, June 11, while executing a search warrant as a member of the TPS Emergency Task Force (ETF). Const. Pinizzotto served with the TPS for 18 years and had been an ETF member for the past five years.
While our flags are already lowered, they now also serve as a visible expression of our collective respect for this officer, his family, colleagues, and community.
These tragedies are a sobering reminder of the risks faced every day by those who serve and protect our communities. As an institution dedicated to public safety education and training, we join police services and communities across Ontario in mourning these losses and recognizing the dedication and sacrifice of both officers.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and policing colleagues affected by these losses.
