Right after graduating from Douglas College’s Certificate in Education Assistance and Inclusion, Tracy Ha found a fulfilling career as an education assistant. She now works with kids to help them navigate school while also managing administrative tasks for teachers. The experience motivated her to get more involved with educational work.

“After three years of supporting teachers and seeing the care they put into their work, I was inspired to become an elementary school teacher,” she says. “Once I learned that Douglas’s Inclusive Education and Disability Studies Diploma transfers to teaching degrees, this pathway felt like the right fit for me.”

Building on her knowledge from her previous studies and current work, Tracy explored the stigma surrounding disability and how to empower students who face it.

“As an education assistant, I love helping students grow academically and socially. It makes me excited that Douglas has a path where I can take my support further, focusing fully on kids and teaching them in an inclusive environment.”

The Great B.C. ShakeOut is happening Oct. 15 at 10:15am. Douglas College is taking part in these educational drills so our students and employees know what to do in case of an earthquake.

Participation in these drills is voluntary but greatly encouraged.

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to acknowledge the impact of Canada’s residential school system on Indigenous Peoples and recognize the role we all play in reconciliation. It is a time to learn, listen and reflect on our ongoing commitment to the 94 Calls for Action that emerged from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.

On Sept. 28, Douglas College hosted Resilience and Reconciliation Through the Arts in collaboration with the Sarah McLachlan School of Music to recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The event featured live performances by two generations of Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) Nation artists: Latash-Maurice Nahanee, a visual artist, storyteller, cultural educator and traditional performer and Mandy Nahanee-Campbell (Lady Sinncere), a hip-hop artist and cultural performer who blends Indigenous storytelling with contemporary music.

The artists also led a panel discussion on the intergenerational impacts of colonization, sharing their lived experiences while exploring how the arts can support cultural resurgence, healing and cultural connection.

Wanting to stay active while supporting her community, Julia Shearer turned to Douglas College’s Bachelor of Therapeutic Recreation.

“Throughout my life, I’ve always had a lot of hobbies, including sports, playing musical instruments, baking and camping,” she says. “I chose this program so I could help others while nurturing my different interests and skills.”

During her studies, Julia learned how to help clients achieve recreation goals by creating activity programs that met their physical, social and mental health needs.

“Douglas’s program provided multiple projects and work placements, so I felt prepared to work as a recreation therapist by the time I graduated.”

Now, Julia is a certified therapeutic recreation specialist for Fraser Health who helps a diverse group of long-term care residents maintain their quality of care while doing activities they love.

Today is National Gymnastics Day, and Psychology Instructor Dr. Gabriela Ionita is doing her part to help gymnasts build mental strength and confidence. 🤸

In her recently published workbook with co-author Natalia Purcel, “TRAIN with Confidence: A Gymnast’s Complete Guide to Navigating Fear, Overcoming Mental Blocks, and Returning to Your Skills,” Dr. Ionita delves into the psychology behind the sport to provide practical exercises and strategies to gymnasts to strengthen their mindset and overcome challenges.

“Gymnasts are incredibly dedicated athletes, yet there are still so few resources devoted to helping them develop the mental side of their sport,” she says. “We created ‘TRAIN with Confidence’ to translate psychological science into practical, accessible tools that gymnasts can use to build mental strength and confidence, navigate fear and mental blocks, and develop greater trust in themselves and their abilities.”

The workbook is for gymnasts at all levels as well as for parents and coaches who want to better support them.
