Fascinated by human behaviour and what she can learn from it, Catherine Joe Abraham chose to pursue a Diploma in Criminology at Douglas College.

“I wanted to study at an institution that would challenge me and provide opportunities beyond the classroom,” she says. “Douglas offered exactly that, allowing me to explore the field, discover my interest in forensic science and build confidence before continuing my education.”

Catherine’s studies opened the door to real-world work experience with an internship at the Mount Pleasant Community Policing Centre. During her time there, she assisted with office operations, community programs, fundraising and community partner work.

“The experience strengthened my communication, organizational and administrative skills while allowing me to interact with people from diverse backgrounds. It’s made me feel more prepared for a career in criminology.”

Mount Pleasant Community Policing Centre

Data analytics play a larger role in health care than most realize. They improve patient safety, support better clinical decisions, protect privacy and help organizations improve the quality of care they provide. Fascinated by how much impact data can have, Vaishnavi sought a career in the field with Douglas College’s Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management (HIM).

“I’ve always enjoyed analyzing problems to find practical solutions,” she says. “It’s rewarding to know that even small improvements to health data can make a real difference for patients and health-care providers.”

It’s a joy she explored during her time at Douglas while learning how to assess health-care information. She transformed that knowledge into real-world results during her work placement at Surrey Memorial Hospital, identifying data trends that could support patient safety and quality improvement initiatives.

“I wanted to make a positive difference to people’s lives. My time at Douglas has given me that opportunity, preparing me for the HIM field so I can ensure health information is accurate, secure and available when needed.”

Last week, we celebrated our annual Pride flag-raising events at the New Westminster and Coquitlam campuses alongside the DSU Pride Collective. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

We had some special guests from the provincial and Tri-Cities municipal government attending the events who showed their support and solidarity with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community at Douglas and beyond.

Starting this Fall, students who hold a bachelor's degree from Douglas College will have a faster pathway to graduate studies at Adler University.

In partnership with Douglas, Adler will provide eligible Douglas graduates with expedited admission to select master’s degree programs in psychology, mental health and public policy.

Students will also receive a $2,000 pathway scholarship that will be applied directly toward tuition and fees.

Looking for a career boost? 🚀 Douglas College students in select programs can receive up to $3,500 for skills training through the province’s StrongerBC future skills grant.

Funding is available to help nearly 300 students in the 2026/27 academic year enhance their skills through short-term training to fill in-demand jobs in evolving sectors. Douglas has been granted $500k in funding for programs including the Dare to Lead™ program.

“With the StrongerBC grant, Douglas College is providing more people with access to training that gives them an edge in a competitive labour market,” said Dr. Kathy Denton, President of Douglas College.

Wanting to encourage and empower others, Kali McVeigh naturally gravitated to mental health support work, helping clients navigate barriers to access vital mental health services. It wasn’t long before she wanted to go further and play a key role in supporting clients with their mental health goals and well-being.

“I knew I had more to offer for client care; I just needed to build on my experience,” Kali says. “Douglas’s Bachelor of Social Work paved the way with its accessibility.”

Guided by caring, supportive instructors, she learned to approach clients without judgement while building the confidence to advocate for them in real-world situations. Determined to use her skills to assist those in the corrections industry, Kali requested a work placement in that area.

While never done at Douglas at the time, faculty worked hard to make it possible.

“Because of that support, I was able to not only gain the specialized experience and knowledge necessary to secure work with a correctional facility but also earn a master’s degree in social work.”

Now, Kali helps individuals as a social worker at Fraser Valley Institution while offering counselling guidance with Eterna Counselling and Wellness. She is also currently working toward her Registered Clinical Social Worker (RCSW) designation to expand her clinical practice.
